Saanich Peninsula ad Gulf Islands THIRTY-FOURTH YEAR, No. 19. SIDNEY, Vancouver Island, B.C., Wednesday, May 8, 1946. District Engineer K. Sidney Wharf; Businessmen Press For Morton To Inspect Adequate Protection Businessmen of Sidney learned on Thursday evening that K. Morton, Federal district engineer, will shortly visit Sidney to inves- tigate thoroughly the need for proper wharfage. Long a source of complaint, overtures made to Maj.-Gen. G. R. Pearkes, M.P., will seek action on the wharfage situation here, it was hoped. The third largest port of entry fur. Canadian and American visi- turs to Vancouver Island, the Sid-. ney wharf has long been neglect- ed. This year, the sum of $4,500 will be spent to repair the floats at -which fishermen and yachts- men tie up when: landing. “Long. overdue, the work , was slated to have been done last year. “Businessmen: have- pressed. the government for more ade- quate protection for the ‘wharf structure. ..While seldom exposed - in’the summer months,. in’ winter, a southeasterly. gale makes. dock- sing ‘at ‘the’ wharf difficult.» Ac: . the. wharf: is not. sufficient for ‘larger. vessels. ° ‘At. the meeting | ‘of the’. Rifle shooting will be one of the activities, not only rifle shoot- ing of a practical nature adapted to the country, but also rifle shooting of the marksmanship class. Affiliation arrangements with ‘the British Columbia Rifle Association have been worked out and it is expected that an in- creasing number of the newly- formed Rangers will find their way into regularly scheduled com- petitions held by the B.C. Rifle and the Dominion Rifle Association. There is every chance also that some Rangers will. continue to compete at Bisley, England, which is the mecea of all expert) marksmen.
