And while we chose stories which we believe best il- lustrated the issue, there are a myriad of other agencies and dedicated individuals on the Peninsula that, on an ongoing basis, help create a better w orld for the disabl- ed. It would be impossible to single oul everyone who gives their time to this worthwhile cause, but.a few or these unsung heroes deserve special mention. - Topping the list is Panorama Leisure Centre staff led by Monty Holding, and recreation commission members chaired by Eric Sherwood, who have initiated many improvements — both to the building and pro- grams — to enable handicapped people access to our ~ recreation facility. Central Saanich parks director Tim Richards also deserves a tip of the hat, having spearheaded a network of wheelchair accessible trails in Centennial Park. Then there’s the countless dozens who volunteer at Saanich Peninsula Hospital, Mt. Newton Daycare Cen- tre, Peninsula Community Association and local. per- sonal care homes. Add to this the long list of ‘*eves’’ for the blind, ‘‘ears’’ for the deaf and friends to the needy. While Rick Hansen spent two years of his life raising the world’s awareness of the disabled, we must not forget those who take. the issue to heart in action and deed.
