Page 6 THE REVIEW Wednesday, June 9, 1976 CADETS DISPLAY TOP PERFORMANCE AT ANNUAL PARADE by Reg Davis Last) Saturday evening | witnessed one of the most impressive displays of precision marching - drilling and band music | have ever seen. Not, as you may think, by a team of seasoned adult service personnel - but instead by Sidney’s own 676 Kinsman squadron of air cadets. Numbering a total of 83, including 18 young ladies, this squadron, whose members ages range between 13 to 19, were immaculate in their dress - perfect in their discipline - and without one of them out of Step they marched and drilled hefore a large crowd of of- ficers and immediate families, wa their P8th annual inspection and parade. Responding smartly to orders and with perfect precision, their performance was a credit to these young people, who spend many hours of hard training and drilling throughout the year. There must have been many a proud parent amongst the audience as they watched their offspring perform such a stirring | display. With Reid Hannan — of- ficiating as M.C., the squadron was first inspected by Major W.D. Stroud. Then, trophies were presented to mark the achievements of the cadets. All of them displayed perfect drill and salutes as they stepped up to receive their awards, After the parade - Warrant Officer, Ist class, Mark Theaker told The Review some of the honours this out- standing squadron has earned. For five consecutive years, from 1970 to 1974, they were the top squadron in B.C. In 1974 they achieved the ultimate honour, by being the top squadron in all of Canada, out of a total of 380 squadrons -a fine performance. In) markmanship - — they scored 1499 points out of 1560 - as close as one can get Four of the cadets hold powered pilots licences, while five hold a= licence to fly gliders. At) the moment, the squadrons members are busy building their own aircraft. Much credit must go to Warrant Officer Theaker, as he is responsible not only to his superior officers, but also for the training of the cadets. He has done a remarkable job, and is a perfect example of what service training and discipline can do for a young person. Following a banquet at squadron headquarters, commanding officer, Major J.H. McLeod was presented a picture of the DC-3 aircraft he flew for many years. The sun obliged by showing up for the parade, and Sidney should be proud of the achievements of this fine body of young men and women, whose dedication and hard work has resulted in bringing top honours to this community.
