Legislative Assembly, be repealed
and a new act drafted.

Votes for Chinese and Hindus
of Canadian citizenship were re-
commended and three members
of the committee urged that all
racial discrimination be  elimin-
ated, meaning that Japanese also
should vote in provincial elec-
tions. Doukhobors who served
with the armed services, rejected
by the armed forees, their wives
and descendents would likewise
be permitted to vote if the com-
mittee’s report is adopted.

Compulsory voting has never
been tried out in Canada. Sev-
eral nations of Europe and Aus-
tralia have reported compulsory
voting a solution to many of their
election ills. But long debate
stands between the commitice’s
report and adoption of compul-
sory voting by legislation. in Brit-
ish Columbia.

Handicraft Exhibition

Pickles and Mrs. Kersey. This

included some first-rate examples
of hand-weaving in cloth, drap-
ery, tartan, and necktie material;
an exquisite crochet tablecloth in
fine design and inlaid wood and
several specimens of stuffed toys
in crochet wool and cloth. Ex-
hibits from several W.I. were on
view.

Royal Oak with its large mem-
bership presented a delightful col-
lection of various arts and crafts
done by residents in the district.
This ineluded some exquisite em-

broidery on linen, with hand-
made edging; silk cross-stitch,
crochet and rug in hooked wool

by Mrs. Andrews, of Hillerest
Vila. Two superb specimens of
fine linen crochet insets and bor-
ders on linen dinner cloths and
bedspreads by Mrs. Minty and
Mrs. Hodgson.

Shown by Mrs. Ingram, vice-
president. of the Royal Oak W.1.,
was a magnificent . all-over cro-
ehet bedspread and a fine shet-
land shawl, A rug in unusual
raffia stitch in cloth was shown
by Mrs. Isthel] Hammond, and
knitted from wool grown, carded
and spun by Mrs. Larkin late of
South Pender Island and now of
Royal Oak, was an excellent ex-
ample of boy’s Indian sweater.

Among. the crafts were
amples of hand-painted china and
bobbin lace by Mrs. Harold Pet-
hick, Elk Lake. Beaten copper
jugs, trays and trinket boxes by
Mrs. Olive Norman and Mrs.
Varold Pinhorn who also exhibited
three hand-woven teacloths in
pastel colors and a pressed flower
picture.

Mrs. A. P. Hobbs showed three
specimens of her “Country Gar-.
den Craft’’—pressed -flower pic-
tures with watercolor-——while Miss
Jennifer. Hobbs put*in. a. pink. pot-
‘tery. bowl, whose turquoise lining
was a charming’ setting :for a
dainty South Sea shell ornament
by. Mrs. Edmund Oldfield.

dogs, a metal portrait-plaque, an
original pewter cigarette ‘box. and
