; “ 6 WHITE ROCK SUN’ Week by Week In The By G. PLANTING TIME From now on there will be all sorts of plants that will have to be planted. But first of all let us turn our attention to the spring-flowering bulbs, which must go into the ground first. The first which should be planted are daffodils and nat cissi; for these require more time to root and get establish- ed than some of the other var- jeties, for instance the tulips which need not go in till last. Tulips may be planted any ime up to the middle of Nov- ember, but I would not leave them till then in case the bad weather stops you. Many of the small bulbs, like crocuses, | snowdrops, scillas, grape hya-| chionodora | cinths (Niuscari), (glory of the snow), and others of that type, should be planted early. Hyacinths can be next on the list, and for outdoor planting, it is not necessary to plant the No. 1 sizes; use there for in- door forcing. The No. 2 or even No, 3 sizes should be good enough for the first year plant- ing; they should increase in size as the seasons go on, for hyacinths do not need to be lifted after blooming, in fact they are better left undisturb- ed for a number of years All the bulbous irises should be planted out as early as you can obtain the bulbs. Some of these start making growth in late autumn. Bulbs which have been left in the ground will often show green tops about this time. These bulbous irises are quite worthwhile growing, for most of them make a loyely showing when many of the other bulbs have finished blooming, and also they make good subjects for cutting. ish and English irises are typ ical of these, and flower at dif- ferent times in ten days’ in- |}, A a Ee Sa SS Professional Directory WI. 8-8111 D. Iris persica is a very dwarf kind, 3” to 4” high, a pale yellow, and also blooms around February - March. Both these are very suitable for the rockery. The Winter Aconites come out into bloom at about the same time as these last nam- ed irises, and are also useful in the alpine garden or the wild garden. Erythroniums, or Dog Tooth Violets are lovely little subjects and do well in a shady corner. The colors run in delicate tints of white, pink, cream, bright yellow and rose. They are very hardy. Fritillaria meleagris, the Snake's Head Lily, a singular and effective garden flower which is prettily checkered, is also a sutable subject for the rock garden Then don’t forget the ane- mones. They make a wonder-| ful showing, especially when | }planted in a mass, and they | bloom for such a long time. | The most commonly grown here are the De Caess, large single |flowiers of every shade, and the | |St. Brigid, most of which are} semi-double flowers ranging | purest white, embracing cj Searlet, rose, salmon-pi White Rock | Hea are now locat-{| ed Thrift Ave., with #\sub-headquarters at ire Hall, 15310 Sunnyside || Rd., |. 8-8287, Mrs. |} Ballard, Secretary-Treasurer. | SATURDAYS and EVENINGS BY APPOINTMENT PHYSIOTHERAPY ne) HYDROTHERAPY Phone Monday through Friday Wi, 80-8069 R. A mass of anemone Appennina, a blue-mauve shade, or ane- mone fulgens, a brilliant scar- let, is something out of this world. There is such a list of grand of narcissi and daf- fodils that it is difficult to recommend specific kinds, Théfe aré latge yellow truripet daffodils, white trumpet daf- fodils, bicolor trumpet daffo- dils, the large cupped narcissi, the small cupped narcissi, in- cluding the poeticus and poet- az species, the double trumpet daffodils, the jonquils and the dwarf species which are chief- ly used in the fock garden Tulips, too, are so very var- fed that they are too numerous to recommend any particular variety, There are the early single and double kinds which are often used for forcing. Then We have the Darwin hybrids, the single late or cottage tul- ips, the breeder and triumph tulips, any of which are good for outdoor planting. The par- rot tulips stand unique at a spring flowering bulbs and are growing more and more in pop- ularity, especially since the terations which will result in complete modernizing is now widerway at White Rock's Super-Valu store on Johnston Road, A 38-foot extension is being made on the south side of the building and when completed the front of the store will face the south instead of Johnston Road. Entrances and exits will be provided on this side of the building. The present front of the building will be partially brick- new color introductions. They are particularly effective in the perennial border or planted in groups in front of shrubs or evergreens And lastly, there are the tulipa species, about which I wrote last year, mostly dwarf jand early, such as Kaufman- |nia, the water liliy tulip, Eich leri, vermillion-orange, and Praestans Fuscilier, vermillion- orange, which produce three to five flowers on one stem, and the Peacock strain, a cross be- tween greigii and Kauffmann- jiana, yery attractive for its dif- south side, Stevenson reports. Construction is expected to be completed sometime in November. Expansion to the building is being carried out in an effort to keep up with the growth of White Rock and district, Steven- son said.
