Page D22 THE REVIEW 9781-2nd St., Sidney B.C. Joanne Griffey, Kathy Gor- don, Laurel Gordon, Vern Gordon and Lynn Gardner are the hard working Cornish people. Vern Gordon, owner of Cornish’s Book and Stationery in Sidney doesn’t lack for company. He orders the myriad — of stationery, office, art and school supplies, cards and the thousands of other items crowded onto his store’s shelves from about three dozen supplicrs. .Almost every day salesmen drop in to pick up orders and talk about upcoming deals. "There’s almost always at least two. Mondays are the worst," Gordon said as he flipped through a thick catalogue. "The ferry pulls in and they pour off the boat and come straight here. "A day around here. without a salesman is a holiday." Gordon, now 53, and his wife Laurel have owned the store. for 20 years, since they bought it in- 1968 from Don Trivett who had in turn purchased it from Con and Maxine Cornish six months bec- as an extension of his Victoria stationery store. but changed his mind and sold it to his manager, Gordon. Gordon, who was born in Lash- burn, Saskatchewan but moved to Victoria when he was five, said the Cornishes started the business "I don’t know where and I’m not sure when" but they sold mostly books at the ime. "I found that to be a losing proposition and expanded into stationery and cards and _ social stationery (announcement cards, guest books, ¢tc.)," he said. "We carry the Westem card scrics and, you know, people come here from all over the Island to buy them." It takes four, full time and two part time employees to look after the customers, and direct sales- men.to the back of the store. All three Gordon daughters have worked there. Kathy is now onc of the full Ume employees. The Wednesday, April 27, 1 988 lere come the salesmen -other two are marricd. Sherry is living in Dawson City and Karen in Calgary. In addition to pouring through companies’ catalogues, Gordon produces one of his own and delivers copies throughout the community each year in time for Christmas. "It seems we’re always thinking about Christmas around here," he said, flipping. through another volume. "We’re ordering Christ- mas things now, we do that al- most every month. And when De- cember comes, we sell it all." After 20 years in business, Gor- don hasn’t got retirement on his ‘mind -- or holidays. "It’s tough to get away from here. I’ve got enough work at home to keep me busy for a couple of. years, but retirement? I’m not even thinking about it.” Back to the catalogues. And here comes a salesman. fore.
