Spring and. autumn are
especially exciting times of the
year for bird. watchers, It is
during these seasons that we have
the best chance of seeing rare.or
uncommon. migrants. passing

through our area. Many of these
pause briefly here on very long

journeys, either to very distant

regions in the Arctic where they.

breed or to wintering areas far to
the south.

Also in the fall, species which
winter here make © their an:
pearance in. numbers just:a
summer residents return in ine
spring to nest locally.

“Last weekend, Mary and I had
the genuine pleasure. of meeting

do their level best to keep track of
all rare sightings for our area.
They had parked their car on the
side of the.road at the junction of
Island View Rd. and Pat. Bay
Highway and were out studying
through. their. field
pulled up. and
jumped out to have a look at
they. were looking at so
intently...

In-a small wet area \ running up

to Island. View Rd... from’ the
north, several. shorebirds » were
busily foraging for food amonga
series of grassy hummocks and
slight depressions. A common
snipe with characteristically long
straight beak and streaked back
was probing deep into the mud
for food items.

Then we spotted two pectoral
sandpipers, their greyish buff
breasts. separated. sharply from
the white underparts. They were
old friends from-the Arctic where
we... had studied and
photographed them.~.Pectorals

or sub-Arctic!.For several years a
pair of them nested in the small
church tower of an abandoned
Roman Catholic Mission on the
Arctic coast where.Mary and.|

were working.

‘On-‘our return trip from Island
View. beach, we watched -the

-rough-leg ‘hover. over.an ‘area. of

long yellow. grass: before drop-
ping to ground and retrieving a
small vole. :The hawk fled to-a
nearby fence. post. ..where. he
proceeded to rend and consume

wrist-marks on the otherwise pale
underwings were clearly visible.
