Kt is in fulfillment of — this desire that he plans to get off for the Fiji Islands in his re cently acquired 29 foot yawl in August to give medical atten jon to islanders in remote atolls, But prior to setting out across the Pacific he plang to slip in to White Rock Bay to bid fare well to his many friends who Wish him Godspeed in his quest. Among his many friends are the Tom Irwins of Terry | Road. | Born in Australia and rear Jed by a Godly mother, Garrett Jat an early age became con scious of his responsibility to his fellow men not only to give }them the story but also to attend their needs. To him food for he soul and food for the body go hand in hand. But it was while cruising | among the tiny islands while a merchant seaman that he first! became aware of the tremend- ous physical need-of these re mote people who had no way of getting medical supplies un- to less they were brought in to them by boat. It was then he determined that some day he would return to the islands equipped to’ help these people. That was 16 years ago. Since then this husky Australian has married the daughter of a Bap. fist minister and has three children. He came to the Lang- ley district three years ago and turned to selling life insurance, but never Josing sight of his first goal, that to acquire a ves sel to take him back to those | needy islanders. His determination paid off and soon as a successful sales- man he was able to save enough | money to purchase the South-| ern Cross II last January. | He has faith to belieye he will be able to set sail for the Fiji slands by August and if money is forthcoming he will send his family ahead by liner, | but if necessary he will take | them with him in the nas) yawl. The Southern Cross has an | all-welded steel hull and was | built in Vancouver in 1947. She | is 29 feet long between per- pendiculars, and 44 feet over- all, with a beam of 11 seven inches, | She has a 35 foot spruce main- mast and an 18 foot, six inch missen, and can carry 519 square feet of canyas.
