provincial parks. come. ‘into
existence might just assume that
the provincial government buys
up the land and declares it a park.

Or; because.so much. of the
province is already Crown land,

the government just turns . some

of it into a park.

But a great many of British
Columbia’s provincial parks have
materialized because they were
gifts to the. province by altruistic
individuals, groups or com-
‘panies.

The: Ministry. of Lands, Parks
and. Housing has received some
90 gifts of land over the past 63
years. More than half of these

. donations provided all or nearly
all the land that went.to make up
_ the parks...

In all, close to 4, 000 hectares
(9,600 acres) has been donated.

The first gift was received: in
1921. from John Dean: of
Saanichton. He gave the province
32 hectares that was to form John
Dean Provincial Park.

Later. donations of. adjacent _

land — 1.lha. from A. Collins in
1939, 33.6 hectares from Mrs.
W.C.> Woodward:.in 1959, 8.1
hectares from S. Pickles in 1959
-and 67.6 hectares by M. Monfort
in 1960 expanded the park to its

for a provincial park that bears
their name near Cedar, B.C.

Indeed, even royalty gets in on
the act. In. 1966, © Princess
Margaret gave’ 194 hectares on
Portland Island which was later

established as Princess Margaret:
