Sidney-Steveston Ferry will be discontinued and a broader, speedier service inaugurated from Swartz Bay to Vancouver will become a reality in the next few years. The trend is undoubtedly a vast trek of settlers from the eastern part of Canada to the West. Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and the Saanich Peninsula will all become heavily populated in the next few years. A faster, -more efficient service to the mainland will become impera- .tive. The Gulf Islands, long neglected in ferry facilities, will also need better ferry facilities. Unless an adequate breakwater is built at Sidney, there is little chance of transportation companies allowing larger vessels to berth ‘here overnight on an all-year-round service. With the expansion of the Airport at Patricia Bay, the cutting of the East Saanich Road and the rerouting through Sidney. there is every indication that retail business will not suffer ‘here. What -is needed is unity of thought and co-operative -aetion on the part of those interested. Too long have Sidney and district merchants remained isolationists. If “local self-government in the form of some sort of incorpora- ‘tion can not be affected, then the creation of a central Board of Trade, with affiliations with other similar bodies . should be immediately inaugurated. The Sidney Business- men’s Association has done a magnificent task thus far. It is time now: when others should have the right to assist in planning for the future. If, and it now appears that it is extremely. likely, the ‘Canadian Pacific company do operate from the Swartz '. Bay. wharf in the next-few years, Sidney must prepare for -the future. But a comparison of the wagés then in Russia with those before the revolution showed a surprising increase, greater than for the same period in Canada! Aren't we a lot more than a little illogical in blaming Russia because in 40 years, many of them years of war, Russia has not achieved as much in Democracy as we did in 900 years of our history, and be it remembered that it is only recently that anywhere in Britain or the dominions,-more than half the people had the sufferage. Any demo- cracy which did not include women was only a half democracy. The contributions we can make to democracy is by using it more right here in Canada, where so many think it is a mattress on which they can go to sleep instead of a weapon for the conquest of new vic- tories for the common good, new horizons and new goals for humanity.
