Amid the papers and books and
‘files in Cathryne Armstrong’s
office are dolls: a carved wooden
doll from Thailand, a suffragettc
doll from Germany, a Negro rag
doll, a doll from Japan, a doll from

_ Peru and a doll from Africa.

Collected during her travels with
the International Council of
Women; the dolls symbolize Arm-
strong’s commitment to a better
future for their real life counter-
parts.

Last weck, Armstrong’ s 20- plus
years of work in the women’s
movement were recognized with

_the presentation of a Persons
Award by Gov.-Gen. Jeanne Sauve
in Ottawa.

The Saanichton resident is one
of only six recipients this ycar.

“I’m excited about it because it

it is harder for women outside of
Ottawa and Central Canada to gain
recognition for their work.

a bachelor’s degree in political
scicnce and sociology;.a degree
she carned while also raising a

“That is when | decided’ there
had to be.a place for women.”

issues, serving as president of the
Consumers Association of Canada
in 1966-67.

She had been in the Canadian
Women’s Army Corps in Canada,
Great Britain, France and Belgium
during the Second World War.

“When you come through a war
you always have that fecling that

better, not just for women but-for
everyone.”

together while those in North and

Co-operation was important: the
International Organization of
Women enjoys high status at the.
United Nations as a non-.
governmental body, able to pro-
pose motions to that international

involving the Caribbcan and
North, Central and South Ameri-
can women’s organizations.
The group was formed in 1977

and Armstrong was president from

1981h until 1986.

“You always have to gear to the
cultural. differences of the coun-
trics involved,” she said. But

Armstrong retired from the

international women’s movement
