Vet Credits Good

Veterans are being notified

that there is no hurry to get their

re-establishment credits used up.
Acting to spike rumors, Veter-
ans Minister Mackenzie said that

“the ‘eredits will be available fo:
years to come.”

His statement-was prompted by
; the “unusually large numbers”

of veterans who had applied in
recent weeks for their credits or
the remainder of them, many ap-
parently under the impression
that the credits would shortly be
cancelled.

Under the War Service Grants
Act, the credits will be available
“within a period of 10 years from
January 1, 1945, or the date of
discharge, ‘whichever is the later.”

The credits can be taken. in a

-complete lump or piecemeal,

Following up a statement re-
cently made to the metropolitan

press, Premier John Hart in a.
formal statement this week gave
an emphatie denial to the current
stories that he had’ decided to
retire from the Premiership of
the Coalition government.

“No decision has been made in
this regard and no speculation
along this line will have any bear-

ing upon by decision in the
future,” Premier Hart stated.

“The Coalition government has
three more years to run, and
should I decide to retire from the
leadership or take the Coalition
government to the country again,
T shall make, that announcement
to the public in an official state-
ment issued to the ipress of this
provinee,”’ the Premier concluded.

PUBLIC WORKS CONTRACTS

Mr. Justice S. Smith, of the
Court of Appeal, is now hearing
the petition of seven major con-
tracting firms for redress against
increased costs resulting from
government acts and orders. . The
¢claims. of the firms, who _hold
contracts for government
way jobs were referred by the
government to Mr. Justice Smith
as special commissioner, -follow-
ing a statement made in’ the leg-
islnture ‘by: the Hon. E. ©. Car-
son, setting out the difficulties
confronting contractors as a re-
sult of mounting costs.

Thirteen contracts are involved
in all, including work on the new
Hart Highway to the Peace River
district, the Okanagan Highway,

the Trans-Canada Highway, the -
Hope-Prineceton . Highway, the
Cariboo . Road, the -Southern
Trans- Provincial, Highway’. and

Nelpon Nema Road.

APPOINTMENTS MADE

K. ©. McCannel, assistant dis-
trict forester in’ Vancouver Forest
district since May, 1945, has been
appointed chief of the B.C. Forest
Service’s newly-formed parks di-
vision, it was announced this week
by the Hon. E. T. Kenney, min-
ister of lands and forests,

Mr. MeCannel will have charge
of 52 provincial parks or park
areas with a total area of 10,823,-
130 square miles. His headquar-
ters will be in Victoria.

Another appointment made this
week was that of II. S. Hurn,
principal of South Park school,
Victoria, to the position of direc-
tor of School and Community
Drama for the Department of
“Education. The Tlon. Dr. G. M.
Weir, minister of education, made
this announcement.

My. TWurn, who has been chair-
man of. the. Greater Victoria
Schoot Drama Festival from the
time of its inception until a year
ago, has also. been-an active mem-
ber of the Victoria Little Theatre
executive and has served as vice-
chairman of the B.C. Regional
Committee -.of the | Dominion
Drama’ Festival,

FISHERIES LICENSE FEES

A new sehedule of fees for
fisheries plants in British Colum-
bia, has been approved by order-
-in-council of the Provincial gov-
ernment this week.

Licenses costing $100 will be
required for all plants except sal-
mon canneries, which will be re-
quired to pay $200 each.

The fees are deseribed as regu-
latory, not to produce revenue for
the government. Operators will
be permitted to consider the fees
as regular operating expenses.
