V6H 3V9 ALL IN THE SAME BOAT FIONA McCALL AND PAUL HOWARD Did you ever dream about taking your family and fleeing the material world in which we live? Experiencing new adventures? Fiona McCall and Paul Howard may have had different reasons for their bold journey around the world but-it is a concept that many of us daydream about. “All In The Same Boat” is a wonderful tale of a family, McCall, Howard and their two young children, who worked together to build __a boat that would carry them as they explored our planet. Some may claim that the story is not all that original but when you take into consideration that the children were only four and six years of age when the family set off on their odessey from Toronto in 1983, you must admire their spunk. While most of us will wholeheatedly admit _to loving our children and spouses dearly, spending weeks on end in such close quarters would undoubtedly test our relationships. ‘ McCall and Howard thrive under these circumstances and also gain an added bonus of experiencing new environments and cultures not only through their own eyes, but from their children’s impressions. Readers will find “All In The Same Boat" an interesting book. The range of activities offered at the 2538 Beacon Avenue muscum over the past season quickly dispels any image of silent, dust-filled rooms. The museum is open from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 pm., May to October. Following the May 14 opening this year, nine school tours were held with youngsters treated to a look at the displays, an explana- tion of how the muscum operates closes successful season | and a butter churning demonstra- tion. The pastimes program offered glimpses of bygone activitics and items including spinning and weaving by the Deep Cove Weav- ers and Spinners, wood carving by Red Fairhall, pine needle weaving . by Daphne Rodgers, quilting by Margaret Westlake, a walking wheel brought by Diane Cross and vehicles displayed by the Vintage Car Club. Children learned how young- sters lived in the past through participation in the Junior Hooters Kid’s Club, trying out washing, ironing and games. Speakers from the Royal B.C. Muscum offered four Muscum Talk lectures at the Sidney Library from Aug. 25 to Oct. 6. There were also special events. Muscum Appreciation Weck, held when the museum opened May 14, also attracted visits by the Saanich Historical Artifacts Society and the B.C. Aviation Muscum. In July the museum staff and volunteers entered the Sidney Days parade as suffragettes pro- testing their historical rights. A Scottish party, with folk singers, a piper and free refreshments was the special event in August, attracting more than 160 partici- pants. There are more than 4,000 arti- facts in the muscum of which 90 per cent come from this area. A new exhibit this ycar was the creation of a 1908 period sitting room. The museum recorded its 11,000th visitor before closing for the winter Oct. 12. The Review provides this community calendar free of charge, space permitting.
