J. White, Second Street. The steel work of the Canadian Nor- thern Railway wharf at Patricia Bay is now being put in place and will be ready for the car ferry in a few days. Nurse E. Barrett, R.N., who has been visiting Mrs. P. N. Tester for the past few days, is returning to her home at San Francisco, California, on Friday morning next. The I. O. D. E. knitting class will be held on Thursday, February 15th, at 8 o’clock, at the residence of Mrs. Jas. Critchley, instead of Mrs. Wheeler’s. All members of the Allies Chapter are cordially invited. Mr. E. Scott, Miss A.,Scott and Miss C."Horseburgh, of Glen Ewen, Saskat- chewan, who have been making a tour of the coast cities, spent three or four days in Sidney last week and while here were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Bowman, Third Street. In the Superfluities draw held at Vic- toria on Tuesday Mr. P. A. Clark, of Deep Cove, was the fortunate winner of the silver tea set, while Sergt.-Major Wylie, of James Island, was awarded the violin, and Miss Muriel Tester, of Sidney, secured a handsome picture. So far.as is known at present two other prizes went to residents on James Is- land. The committee of ladies appointed by the Red Cross paid a visit to the Milit- ary Convalescent Hospital, Resthaven, on Monday last to inquire as to how the comfort of the men may be added to in the ward that this district branch of the society intends to assist. They will make their report at the general tneeting of the Red Cross to be held on Tuesday next. The Allies Chapter, I. O. D. E., this week sent to the Field Comforts head- quarters at Victoria the following art- icles: 64 pairs of socks, 9 flannel shirts, 1 sleevless sweater and 2 trench caps. It will be of interest to many of our readers to know that Mrs. George S. Griffin knit twenty-five pairs of these socks during the months of Dec- ember and January. The steroptican lantern lecture given by Mr. W. M. Ritchie in the North Saan ich Methodist Church on Tuesday even- ing last was pronounced a great suc- cess by many who were present. All of the views were splendidly clear and some of them especially so, showing many of the sublimely beautiful spots of our great Dominion as well as many of its unsurpassed scenes of majestic grandeur. The church was filled almost to capacity and the boys and girls showed their appreciation by good at- tentiom, while the whole audience show- ed their appreciation by a good round of applause. The financial returns were quite satisfactory. Just a year ago the big snow storm which lasted about ten days forced three gentlemen who were then in Sid- hey to ‘hit the pike’’ for Victoria, their business being urgent and every other means of transportation being _closed,..Mx. J. M, Fahey had to be in the city to attend to a business meet- ing of his company, and Trooper Bes- wick, of the C. M. R., who is now in France, had to ‘‘hike’’ back as his mil- itary pass had nearly run out, while Mr. Guy Walker made the tramp to the city through the deep snow for the purpose of attending to the funeral ar- rangements of his friend, the late Jas. Davis, who died in Victoria. While these gentlemen were toiling in Corpl. Stewart, of the 88th Overseas Battal- ion, walked out from Victoria to his home here. PRESIDENT WHITE DELIVERS AN- NUAL ADDRESS TO BOARD. (omtinued from page three) service and secured the placing of a box on the V. & S. train, which is of some benefit although it is far short of what we desired. Our efforts to induce one of the var- ious express companies operating in the Dominion to establish a branch here have so far been unsuccessful, but we have not given up hope and feel quite certain that when times once more get good after this great war is over there will be no great difficulty in inducing at least one of the express companies to establish a branch here. Early last summer Mr. W. H. Dawes, thane nnnnen OCT OLATY to the Board, accepted an in-, vitation to attend a meeting of Victor- ia citizens interested in the preserva- tion of our beautiful beaches. At tis meeting a committee was formed to 1 SS reece. tet et re ce ee ce deal with this important subject, Mr. Dawes becoming one of its members. Several years ago, as no doubt most of the members present will remember, the Board of Trade erected a large sign on Dock Island, about three miles out in the channel. During last winter’s severe storms this sign was blown down and partially wrecked, but dur- ing the late fall through the kindness of some of the members it has been re- built and placed in position again. A start was also made on the clean- ing up of the parks in the district, es- pecially those along the waterfront, and I would like to recommend that the work be taken up this year again and carried to completion as the im- provements already shown are highly satisfactory. The dog nuisance and its relation to the preservation of game has been a live subject throughout the year. A thorough investigation of the subject was made by a committee appointed for that purpose when it was found that very little remedy exists for this nuis- ance in unorganized districts. Permanent Roads. You will recall that we were promised over three years ago that when con- struction work was commenced on the South Saanich road that a start would be made on the continuation of the East Road from the boundary between South and North Saanich to Sidney at the same time. This agreement, as you are well aware, has not been carried out owing no doubt to the _ retrench- ment on the part of the government due to conditions created by the war. During the year we again reminded the Government of their promise, but the result was not very satisfactory. I think that during the coming year we should again take this important mat- ter up with our member of the legisla- ture. We should also make arrange- ments to place before him the advisa- bility of extending Beacon Avenue through to Patricia Bay, an improve- ment that is much needed. An Employment Committee A short time back a committee of this Board was appointed to make ay effort towards interesting the public in the formation of a Returned Soldiers’ Em- ployment Committee for the district. As a result of the activities of this committee a public meeting was recent- ly held and an organization formed of representative men to handle this im- portant work. — Island Steamship Service. The Council of the Board in whose hands this important matter has been placed, are working hard for the inter- ests of this port, and while nothing definite has yet been accomplished we may safely leave the matter in their hands. In conclusion I would like to sav that it has been a very great pleasure to me to be privileged to work along with the officers and members of the Board for the general good of Sidney. My faults have always been constantly overlooked and throughout the year there has not been the slightest frittion or misunderstanding between myself and the officers and members. I have at all times found the members willing and anxious to take their share of the work, and I find it hard to single out any individual for special mention, but I am sure you will agree with me that at least one of our members is deserv- ing of our special gratitude for the very able and efficient manner he has fulfilled the duties assigned to him. Of course you all know to whom I refer, our secretary, Mr. W. H. Dawes. I trust and pray God that when we meet in annual session again that this great war that is being fought to pre- | vent future war will have been brought to a successiul victory in favor of the civilized nations who are now, and who may, be, assisting to uphold the stand- ard of justice.
