thy GRIEVE AND MALCOLM ‘DELIGHTED’ OVER RECREATION GRANT Page 2 North Saanich mayor 2aul Grieve and Sidney mayor Peter Malcolm are very happy, to say the least. The provincial government Monday approved grants totalling $616,000 toward the cost of a swimming pool and sports arena in the Dean Park area. Malcolm told members of Sidney council Monday night that both he and Grieve are ab- solutely delighted with: the grant which was approved in its full amount. He said that the centre can now be completed in its original concept at a cost of $1.85 million. Funds will not be available until the end of March next year but council members were gratified by the fact that it was the second largest grant’ in British Columbia. The largest went to Delta. Along with other members of the group he ‘begged, scrounged and sold debentures to make money and actually “raised close to $50,000, “We could have had the whole complex, curling rink and oall, for about 600,000 then’? he said. There is-a garbage receptical . at the head of the second finger, but Horton admitted it was accessible to: other people besides boaters. Horton stated now the Department of Environment is in charge of the wharf, they assess a berthage charge, but no utility fee and the overhead lighting, water and garbage is still available, When questioned by Albas, Hlorton said boaters could plug into the wharfinger’s outlet and run hose lengths to the water sprigots but later said it would be ‘‘very awkward.”’ When King was called to the stand he maintained there were no utilities available. “I felt these were non- existant and so f did not pay,’* he said, He wrote to the town, and said he received no reply, but he-did pay his berthage charges ||, “in full.’ ‘ Furthermore, he stated there” was no hose provided to get the water down to the boats and he would have had to run a hose length 200 yards to the nearest lap. Albas argued the fact was “not that water was not available, but that it wasn’t convenient,” but it) was. still there. King went on to say that only fishermen were allowed to tie up at the finger closest to the power outlet. After consideration, Judge E.I.C.
