Libraries need more than books — they need friends. So says Noel Richardsen, who is spearheading a Friends of the Library association for the new Central Saanich library. “T think libraries should have support from the community. The community should be involved with them.” Ideas discussed-at the first meet- ing of the group, held April 18 at the library, included a library newsletter, a book discussion group and library fundraising. The association would also like lo sponsor guest speakers on pol- lution, conservation and health at the library, talks by visiting authors plus ups for parents on books for children and encouraging ‘reading. “We'd like to have a- program — started by September.” The group will also do fundrais- ing for the library, including the sale of discarded books. While the Friends. do not make policy for the library, they can help support improvements in library @operation. The group in Sidney, of which Richardscn was a member, has supported the library: both financialiy and politically. “The library is a community resource. It shouldn’t be ‘them’ running it and us using it.” The firsL meeting attracted a small. but A former. hotel cook. who cele- brated her 104th birthday April 29 sull likes to whip up a batch of in Brentwood Bay. cook in the American: Hotel and then at the Central Hotel in Brus- sels, Ont.
