But if you’re willing to risk having a smile on your face, leave your troubles at home and join us for Sidncy’s Fourth An- nual Dixicland Jazz Festival! The first thing you necd to. know is that a jazz festival is not a formal affair, so be sure to dress comfortably. You'll sce almost S TUMPTOWN JAZZ was formed in 1982 by Portland pianist Gary Peterson. Since that time, Surviving the Dixieland Jazz Festival every type of dress there, and who knows, maybe you will real- ly get in the spirit of the weekend and outfit yourself in a Sidney Jazz shirt and hat. Comfortable shocs are a must as well, because, even if you’re not planning on it, you will be doing lots of toc tap- ping and hand clapping ... really! You might want those comfort- able shoes to take a walk uptown and check out some of the many other Sidney Days events. Not all | of us can take a full weekend of jazz, so we have tried to schedule the events so that you can take in as much as possible and still catch most of the music. Be sure to check out the Sidney Days schedule of events -- there are dozens of fun things to see and do, and there are bound to be a few which catch your fancy. Opening Ceremonies The official opening cere- monies start on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Sanscha Hall, but don’t be afraid to come carly and get a good scat. The music starts at 7:30 and there will be lots of V.LP.’s on. hand to ensure we start the festival with a bang! Saturday Afternoon Jazz Mixer We don’t know for sure what the musicians will come up with for this event, and neither will they until they have a chance to get together. Hosted by Norrie McFarland of the Dixicland Ex- press, Norrie will be looking for special talents and — different sounds in cach of the bands. He will put them all together into an innovative show . which he promises you won’t want to miss. We could hear some - ragtime piano, a banjo ducl, or who- knows what? You'll have to be there to find out, at Sanscha Jazz Hall, Saturday, 2:30 - 5:30. - Casino Back by popular demand, a casino in the annex at Sanscha Hall on Saturday night from 6 p.m. to midnight.
