Lloyd Gauthier chose this town
over three others because he had
a ‘‘good gut feeling.’’

“THANKSGIVING

“The idea behind a special
constable is to police Native
people by Native people,’’ he
explained. ‘‘The emphasis is on
Native people but there are alot
of outspoken people who would
say they shouldn’t be treated
specially.

“‘From where I stand, it is a
political point of view but |
believe in the concept. | also do
regular work. [If I didn’t |
wouldn’t be any good.”” |

Gauthier started working at
the local detachment Oct. ft,

where he worked for four years.

The Alberta born consiable’s

Creek, 70 miles trom his home
town of Beaver Lodge where he
completed his recruit field traiu-
ing. ne
Gauthier comes from three
generations of non-status In-
dians. His grandmother married
outside and as a result fost her

During his first week on the
job, the special constable spent
his time familiarizing. himself
with the community.

Gauthier was offered posts at
Agassiz, Bella. Bella and
Hazleton. He came out to
Sidney on his own time to look
around and was affected by the
‘‘good atmosphere; I: felt com-
fortable.”’

He was struck by the high
level of organization of the four
local reserves,

“T haven't seen a band yet
that leased lands and have band

offices built -— as an-impartial —

observer,
“He speaks for itself that these

people want to get ahead and

I’m glad to see it."’

In his role as special con-~

stable, Gauthier sees himself
helping the local Natives
wherever he can besides the
regular law enforcement.
