WERKMAN Review Staff Writer After being named junior athlete of the year for 1988, Saturday, Socllner modestly discounted the personal recognition and plugged the five-discipline pursuit he excels in, “Everyone who hears about the sport is really intrigued and really interested. But not too many pco- ple hear about it,” Socllner said. Socllner, 19, was named Greater Victoria Junior Athlete of the Year for 1988 at the 22nd Annual Greater Victoria Sports Celebrity Banquct, Saturday. Receiving the award came as a Surprise to Socllner, who was nominated along with 1988 Scoul Olympics cycling team member Luca Segato and B.C. track athlete of the year Kirsten Lundgren. “It’s really nice that they recog- nized the sport because there is so little known about it,” Soellner SOELLNER WITH A. wall- full of aviaras and his target pistol. Soeliner named junior athlete of the year said. “Pentathlon offers so much to so many pcople.” The second-year UVic student is taking a break from training until after April cxams but is still excited about his last competition at the San Antonio Champions Cup. He was the top Canadian in San Antonio and surpassed the per- formance of one of the Canadian Olympic team’s foremost compe- litor, Nick Fekcte, by scoring 5,090 lotal points. The minimum to qual-— ify is 4,800 points, “Tt was a great competition,” he said. “Everything came together — which is one of the toughest things to do in all five events.” Modern pentathictes start com- petitions by riding a strange, or unknown to them, horse through an obstacle course. Fencing. is next,-and perhaps the most time- consuming. Swimming comes third, fol- lowed by target’ shooting and, finally, a 4,000-mctre cross coun- try run. Socllner says athletes involved in modern pentathlon easily branch out into other sports. A former pentathlon competitor has gone on to national-status as a fencer. Others become ironman compctitors. “T think that multi-discipline sports are the future of sports,” Socllner said. “If there’s more variation pco- - ple won’t get bored and will stick with it much longer.” Multi- discipline sports also He is currently ranked Number 1 in Canada-and has his cyes set firmly on upcoming world cham- pionship qualifying mects in Spain, July 1, and Finland, July 15, — prior to the world champi- Onship in Budapest, Hungary, in mid-August. A Canadian team of four mem- bers has to qualify for the worlds, then it’s a question of funding and whether Canada will send a team. Sports Canada currently docs not fund pentathletes although the B.C. Best Ever program contri- butes. , Socllncr is a member of the Canadian junior and senior mod- em pentathion team, although he won't officially become a senior for two years. Two years from now is always in the back of his mind — when the 1992 Olympics will be held in Barcclona, Spain. Socllner was a breath away from representing the nation in the 1988 Olympics and he’s determined to make it in 1992. Think Service think Prepare for Spring New Business “Ee Phone Listings "MR.
