Wednesday, April 11, 1984 y PAT MURPHY In the face of-a a heated protest .by a delegation of property owners in the area, North Saanich Council, meeting in committee Monday night, backtracked on an earlier decision to allow a 2.23 hectare expansion of Canoe Cove Marina. If the committee recommendation is supported the expansion, which has been approved in principle by council, will hinge on the production of. ‘‘convincing evidence’ that. the enlargement of the marina area is needed. Members of.a protesting delegation told aldermen the expansion was not needed — that the present resources of the marina were not being used to best advantage. Canoe Cove was polluted at the present time and if expansion of the boat mooring area was allowed it would be devastating, Duncan McRoberts told council. ‘Some nights right now the stench is awful,’’ McRoberts said. ‘‘l lived in China for.15 years and 1 know all about ‘night soil and [| tell.you that that-is the stuff 1 often have to clean off my boat.’’ Canoe Cove shoreline is littered’ with waste. right now, Mrs. Muriel Scott-Polson told aldermen, most of it. from | | Continued from Page Al of ‘an. earlier statement in which he claimed Phillips had said the breakwater should not be in the hands of a private developer. ‘“Now.-you’re condoning it.”” Sidney Breakwater Developments. council. will remind the company. of a letter. it: had ‘received Nov. 15, 1983, from the ministry wants lease as collateral. , - Partnership for growth .
