a singer sea eS Wednesday, September 23, 1998 y fair set for By Maria Koropecky _ News Review Contributor Watching the Jaws of Life in action is just one of the demonstrations those attending an up- coming Fire Safety Fair will see. Saanich Peninsula firefighters, fire rescue - personnel, ambulance attendants, RCMP offi- cers, municipal police and other emergency crew members will be demonstrating their skills. on Sunday Oct. 4 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Sanscha Hall. “The main reason for the fair is to let the gen- eral public have a chance to interact with emer- gency services on the Peninsula and ask them. questions,” said Jim Tweedhope, the Town of Sidney's fire prevention officer. “We serve the public and here’s a chance for the public to talk to a face, one on one,” he said. Because the fair is scheduled to take place during Fire Prevention Week, there will be many safety demonstrations held during the day's ac- tivities, including how to extinguish a stovetop fire, how to deal with out of control barbecue flames and how to design personal fire escape ‘routes from the home. Tweedhope said some families may consider keeping ladders in second-floor bedrooms and practising how to properly use them. Deciding on:a meeting point outside the house is also worth adding to any emergency plan, he said. The fair is designed to answer questions and to offer useful tips on how to deal with a wide ar- ray of emergencies.
