RECENT BOOM ‘Recent years have witnessed a tremendous resklential building Room In Canada. Since tho Consus of 1M1 there has been an ostimated Increase of 654,000 households, but the average size of households has declined from 42 persons in 1941 to 39 in 1949, an Indication that the size of families is not as large as it was and that fewer familles are “doubling up.” There were 338336 new bulld- fog units constructed In Canada during the five years from 1945 to the end of 1949, and an additional 2sm00 units were created by con- Nersions of existing structures. Of the dwelling units constructed during the five-year period, 272,230 were one-family detached, were twofamily detached, 3,440 were in rows or terraces, and) $3.165 were In apartments or flats. WOOD USED The 161 Census revealed that the single house was the predom|- nant type of dwelling in rural areas in all parts of Canada, and in western Canada more than threequarters of urban dwellings were also of this type. Only In the urban centres of the Province of Quebec, where apartments and flats were most numerous, did the gle house constitute 2 minor proportion of all dwellings. On the other band, the semi-detached or so-called “double” in Western Canada. Tt formed an important proportion of al] homes only in the urban parts of On- tario and the Maritime Provinces. In 1941 virtually all dwellings in the Maritime Provinces were of wood construction. This was true also of rural areas in other parts of Cans Ontario, and, to m lesser extent, of the urban centres in the Prairfe Provinces and British Columbia. In contrast, three out of every five dwellings in urban Ontario and Quebec were bullt of brick, and in urban Quebec shout 10 per cont were of stone. Geneon houses were not common fn eastern Canada but fn the Prairie Provinces they outnumber- #4 trick housen by nore 4/00. The ptucen hese was mort common in Eritich Columbia.
