4 ar i fa 3 4 i ahh usually worse elsewhere. In our many debates about the future of North Saanich, we have given high priority to preserving our rural atmosphere and protec- ting our agricultural land. : ‘Sometimes these goals seem to be in conflict, as when wooded areas within the agricultural land reserve are devastated and com- pletely stripped of their cover, as has happened recently on Chalet, McTavish, and Tatlow roads. By Geoffrey N. Calvert Soil. was: laid. bare, the entire ecology wiped out, and the way opened to erosion and soil loss — but all. within the definition of agricultural land use. At the other extreme, what we hae sought or permitted: tobe preserved untouched-are in some cases neglected and: impenetrable wooded © areas; choking . themselves .with’ overgrowth,. tangled undergrowth, vines interlaced with thorns, snags, and rotting tree carcasses littered densely over jagged rocks, bogholes, wasp nests and rough terrain -— areas that are attractive only ‘when seen froma distance * As to land designated for residential use, Wwe stipulate miniumum lot size, road width, drainage, access, and other restrictions. It seems to me that all of this provides a somewhat negative ap- ‘proach that leaves out something very. impor tant. What L- would like to suggest is another. set of Vi alues. a moure positive approach that-could be summed-up in the words enhance: “ment, beautification, silviculture, and landscape architecture. If we-can imagine what it would do for our rural atmosphere to have },000 blossoming and foliage trees scattered in strategic places around our-area, including both: private.and public land, we to glimpse the potential. ht, Ornamental trees are not expensive, Though: they. take time to grow. large, there are few things as rewarding in aesthetic value. Fruit trees. of course have an added economic. value. North Saanich is-very rich with possibilities if we approach its future with ‘these thoughts of. enhancement, beautification, silviculture, and landscape architecture. One is reminded of the carefully developed gad manicured rural estates. that can be found in England’ and’ some of the older cultures, where centuries-of thought have gone into the develop- ment of lake, stream, forest and mountain Vistas in complete har- mony with housing, agricultural and pastoral uses of land. Along. with a positive enhancement, we must avoid the negative of detriment to the landscape: lt is interesting: to look at the current Aylard controversy with all these thoughts in mind. If any use is to be made of the 7O-acres of. land i in question, there would seem-to be these alternatives: 1. to slaughter the existing trees and blast out great quantities of natural rock sous to fatten the area and make it fit foruse in-some form of non-soil-based farming, such as long rows of hen-houses, savaging the present landscape but heroically conforming to the concept that this non-arable land has been. placed: rightly or wrong- Jin the. agricultural land reserve: and,- - 2. to preserve there now, including tall trees and wide smooth rock areas, to create several miles of walkways, brushing out and improving the « “-quality-of the wooded areas, and building clusters of homes where This alvernative - people can live. and enjoy. these surroundings. would:give North Saanich something that it does not now: have, that-is needed by people who wish. to be close to nature but do not Wish, -or- cannot any longer, maintain separate homes with in- dividual lots: When you look at it this way, does it not seem easy to see which approach is more radicalsand violent,-and: Which is niore. in har- mony with the concept of a gentle and attractive rural atmosphere? - itis not. the basic. purpose of this writing to intervene in the. - dispute that has arisen over this proposal; but rather to place before the. people of North Saanich the thought thatthe future of our whole, area can: be. one Of very greal beauty. if this is what: we choose.
