VOTING AREA ON PLEBISCITE Dear Sir:-—lEvery citizen will “agree that it is a definitely recog- ‘nized principle, in a country, that when a vote is taken on. any question all the people who are directly affected will have a voice in the vote, Do the people of Sidney realize that, in the matter of the coming plebiscite on the sale of beer in this democratic principle has not been followed? A’ beer parlor, will have its affect on all of Sidney, yet all sections of Sid-. ney unre not to be allowed to vote! Please allow me to explain this more fully. The plebiscite has been enlled for Polling Divisions N.s. 46 and 47. These divisions the main business district from Amelia Avenue south to the tip of Thomas Road and also the Patrician Bay Airport area from Mills Road to Airport Road. Only these areas can vote in this plebis- cite. -The large Polling Division known as No. 45, which is north Mills ‘Road -. and Amelia Avenue cannot vote! This aren is the thickly populated ‘dis- triet around Queens Avenue, Rob- ‘Bay, .Shoal.. Harbour, Haven Drive, and -on_ to the bor- These people are to have nothing. to say. about a, matter that will vitally. affect their town! My: contention is that this is not fair nor right nor just. And I voice the sentiments of hundreds of people in Sidney! May I also point out, to the citizens of Sidney, that the re- quest for a beer parlour does not come because of the popular de- mand.of a majority of. our citi- , zens. ‘This request. comes from asmall ‘group whose. interests are purely selfish. . Yet. by clever handling. of. their ‘interests - they may confuse unwary ‘citizens: and . thus get some. to unthinkingly vote for. beer ‘in Sidney. °-It is ; reported that 35 percent of the . voters: in polling divisions of No.) . 46 and. 47 have signed’ the petition’-for.a plebiscite; but do we realize that if we considered: the full population of, Sidney this: democratic ° Rest . New Class Opened At High School Evening Sessions Registrations are now being re- ceived for Industrial Art and Commercial courses. at North Saanich High | school evening classes, ; The popular Industrial course. will. again .be under direction of .N. E. West, instruc- tor. ‘lhe course’ offers instruc- tion in woodwork and metalwork and will be limited to 15° appli- eants, A new venture this year is. the Commercial course which gives tuition in typewriting, bookkeep- ing and other commercial options, Twenty registrants will be taken, R. Blodgett will instruct. art the More than 11,000 warm air fur- naces were manufactured in Can- ada during) the first quarter of DAT, would not equal more than 80 pereent of the voters? The thinking people of Sidney must also realize this fact: Those “who want-a beer parlour are using the. argument that it will give sidney a new und modern I submit that we do not want a new hotel-at such a cast! Tt it will take a-beer parlour to give us a new hotel, ‘then we better keep the. old hotel! -A- beer parlour will cheapen ‘any hotel. = It will also. create a very. undesirable area all around the hotel and ‘that section of the town in which the hotel is located. Walk past any small-town hotel, which has a license to sell beer, and you will very soon see’ and hear and feel the beer-parlour atmosphere. Mr. Editor, and thinking. people, WE DO NOT WANT THAT: IN SIDNEY! A. beer. parlour in a_ town. is like‘a big: ink’ blotch. on an other- wise’ cle¢ an. letter. -Let’s not -soil our:town..: T cannot. too. strongly urge, that <¢ our thinking citizens: be’ sure, before Oct.:7; that :they: are registered. voters.
