‘ sunk for Swartz | ae Passenger-only ferry service ay terminal A private sector plan for a passenger-only ferry service to downtown Vancouver from the Swartz Bay ferry terminal is dead in the water. BC Ferries has completed its evaluation of the proposal and decided not to introduce such a service this year, President and CEO Tom Ward announced Thursday. ' “We had hoped to introduce this new service beginning this summer, but a number of factors have convinced our Board of - Directors that this is simply not feasible,” said Ward. Reasons cited for scuttling the plan were the ferry corpora- tion’s red ink, lack of suitabie ships for such a run and an unwilt ingness of the B.C. Ferry and Marine Workers Union to negott- ‘ate flexible work practices, said Ward. Last August, the corporation issued a call for proposals from. the private sector to provide a passenger-only catamaran service between Swartz Bay and Vancouver with possible expansion to ~ the Gulf Islands and Sunshine Coast. ~ Six companies responded, and BC Ferries began discussions ‘with the top bidder. But based largely on last year’s loss of $76 million, the board decided not to proceed with the proposal. ~~ Ward, however, said he’s hopeful the corporation will revisit. the idea for a passenger-only run next year. “Pm disappointed that we are unable to begin this service, as . e ol know that many of our customers are looking for new ways to 8 travel between Vancouver Island and the Mainland.” _ Ward also said ferries management wanted union feb to ~ provide better, customer service on the run.
