A Sidney publisher won't be going out of business this year. That - in itself :- is not very remarkable; he hasn’t been going out of business for. years. . What makes this year remarkable is that the company is about-to publish a book which has been described as the biggest Single all-Canadian publishing venture in Canada’s history.” The book - titled “‘Wild Flowers of British Columbia” - will cost Gray's Publishing Ltd. about $116,000, That's roughly 15 times more than publisher Gray Campbell | has-.ever invested in any of his books before. ‘We're gambling,’ Campbell told The Review Tuesday. : “But we'renot going belly-up ..in any event.. We're over the -hump, advance sales, and with what we can expect.to'sell when the book - hits the streets, we're not’ going to lose so much we'll go belly-up.”’ That's a major accomplish- _ ment, one which Campbell wasn’t always sure he could make. He's been carrying on a love affair with the book since its author - UVic's-Dr. Lewis J. Clark - first showed him the manuscript and-the color plates in mid-1970. Like most love affairs, it wasn't always smooth sailing. Campbell wanted.to publish the book, but everyone told him he couldn’ ts - or_at least mat he shouldn't. “When : we started on this pro- ject, -we were advised by the experts.to take it to Italy to have it printed, if we were going to insist on publishing it all,” cae: Boel said. ‘The book could bé printed ‘here, he was told, so much more cheaply: than it could be printed -|: in Canada: that he:could take a year. to live in Italy:while he put it together: and still.save money. |-: ‘But’ Campbell didn’t ‘want to: do it that way - he wanted to print the experts seemed to be right. though. become a love. affair. sleep at night,’ he recalled. to see my doctor every six weeks or so.
