animals, explained Matheson.
Besides Paddington, the couple
have a North American River

recently-arrived seals, racoons,
Canada geese, eagles and

residents.

The brown bear cub was
discovered last year by loggers,
and turned over. to. Hope
veterinarian Dr. Roger Bate. An
avid horseman, the doctor hap-
pened to be coming to Van-
couver Island for horse trials,
and utilized the opportunity to

deliver Paddington to the
Mathesons.
“He couldn't use his . left

forearm,’’ said Matheson. ‘‘We

thought maybe he had broken:

his elbow. But we x-rayed it and

there was nothing there.’’
