AR The Hditorials... THE POPPY FUND CAMPAIGN N November 4 the annual drive of the Saanich Peninsula Branch of the Canadian Legion will open in this dis- - trict. On November 11, Remembrance Day will be ob- -served-throughout the length and breadth of the Dominion. , The local branch of the Legion has long been a dom- inant factor in the community life of the district. Their meetings have been the source of many an intelligent and useful suggestion for community betterment. There is a spirit of cameradie and good fellowship which is the essence of good citizenship. On November 4 they open their own drive, for funds which in a quiet and unobtrusive manner, are disbursed to those of their comrades who are in need. The appeal is not made on behalf of the Legion or its members, but on behalf of all ex-service men who _are in-need. The poppies and wreaths which you will be asked to ‘buy are made by disabled veterans, they are made in Victoria. .The men who make them are absolutely incap- _*-able of earning a living in any other way. If Poppy Day did nothing but‘keep these men self-supporting and self- ~ respecting citizens it would still be worthwhile. , It does much more than this, however. The blood-red poppy, which grows in great numbers on the shattered and torn battlefields of France and Flanders is in truth, the Flower of Remembrance. It covered the first rough graves of our soldier dead. It is a sacred. emblem. It provides - us-all with an emblem. of heroic valour, a remembrance of those who died for justice and right. It also holds a promise of. much-needed relief for those who lived, but wracked by the strain of war, need help. Let us wear proudly then our Poppy. Let us make our donation worthy of the cause. Do your bit when you are called upon for the campaign. . ANNUAL SCHOOL MEETINGS EXT -Wednesday, November 6, is the date set for the annual election meetings of the North Saanich School District. Not.only will three trustees be elected to transact “the school business. of the. district, but the reports of those " who have served for the past year will-be given. , The:-meeting should interest all who live in the district. The. implementation of the Cameron: Report has brought many changes to the North Saanich district, notably higher ‘school taxation, and those who attend the annual meeting ‘few: months: in:their. school. affairs: “on ‘the. We can promise that the material presented will not be dull. In spite of all that is said to the contrary, the ON PR OP PEEP PPP PP ULF ISLAND RESIDENTS will note that their own Public Meetings are advertised elsewhere in this issue. while we have not discussed here the problems of Saltspring . although doubtless the transportation problem alone will need intelligent interpretation, the. interest of all residents is sought by your Board members. Attendance at all Island meetings is urged, however, are outlined below. It is only by your active participation in these community matters that progress over the whole area is possible. Note carefully the date and time of your meeting, and make it a point to be there. administration of School District 63 is an interesting task. After closely observing our trustees at many a school meet- ing, we feel that they would be the first to admit that they have found the work interesting. Your presence at the meeting will be in some small measure a token of your appreciation for the work your representatives have done, and then too, you will be assisting in the administration of affairs which you are bound, by law, to pay. School administration in North Saanich is no longer small business . slightly more than $10,000 a year is spent in transportation for children, for instance. Your attendance too will assist the Board in one of their first duties, and one that only residents of the district may co-operate in, it is ‘‘To bring the community, the home, the school, into close co-operation for the good of humanity.” oe 0 0m 0 ORD 0-1-4 COD 1) EDEL IED) IED 1S ED () 02ND DL) RID One (1 AD RED (OND OED REELS | OUT OF THE MIST By KIPPER.
