This new British engine is be- ing installed in the 40-passenger . “North Star” soon’ to enter TCA’s international and domestic: ser- vices. ‘The North Star. is a unique combination of American and British aeronautical design, since its airframe is. based upon Doug- las specifications. Two names of greater distinc- tion than Rolls-Royce and Douglas could scarcely be found in avia- tion. What is this Rolls-Royce 620, that, placed in a Douglas body, has produced such fine re- ‘sults? It is the lineal descendant of a family of famous engines. Remember the Schneider’ Cup races when Rolls-Réyce equipment accounted for most of the world’s ‘speed. records? Remember, -too, how the Spitfire with its Merlin engines saved Britain in 1940 and - how. those same power-plants gave. strength -to the Mosquito, the Mustang, the. Lancaster and many other famous combat aircraft. It is not. generally. known that Britain recognized ‘this service of an engine to its people by pre- senting the Rolls-Royce Company with the Empire’s award for dis- ‘ tinguished service. Rolls-Royce went forward with the develop- ment of a related engine for post- “FRIDAY, ‘18 p.an.—Slides for. Two -stages of. super- charging enable it to develop over 1,250 horse-power when cruising at 25,500 feet. Another noteworthy character- istic of. the Rolls-Royce 620 is its mounting which enables the com- plete power plant (engine plus nacelle forward of the firewall) to be changed in about 15 min- utes. An engine change on pre- sent TCA aircraft takes three to four hours. This feature means not only a considerable saving in time and man-power! it also means greater return on the capital. investment in aireraft by keeping them. fly- ‘ing. -All four engines are com- pletely interchangeable on the North Star—inner and outer, port and: starboard. From the pilot’s point of view, the 620 is-a model of simplified handling. In -place: of a multi- tude of knobs, switches, levers. and buttons - these engines call only for individual throttle ‘levers and a master propeller lever (sup- plemented’ by small individual propeller switches). All else is automatic—including mixture and heat controls. TCA has already trained its personnel in the ways of the new equipment.
