Wednesday, November 28, 1984 Hugh’s Views By Hugh Nash The annual bleating over money by the education establishment has started once again and! expect their noise will be around for the usual six months, Every year about this time, particularily:since the Socreds decided to apply the brakes to the run-away gravy train previous provincial ad- ministrations didn’t have the guts to slow down. school trustees, teachers and some parents beat their breasts and tear their hair in mourning over what ‘the government’ is maliciously doing to our children and the future of the whole, darn world, THE REVIEW Greater Victoria school board chairman John Smith says Heinrich simply wants to get rid of more teachers and a Coquitlam trustee call- ed the minister’s attempt to keep education costs stable ‘‘politically motivated’ — je. ‘‘bad.’’ Lib-left rhetoric aside, what is really happening is that: Heinrich - and the Socreds are doing precisely what voters less than two years ago elected them to do, notwithstanding an hysteric campaign mounted by the province’s Socialists — cut government expenditures, no ifs, ands. . or buts, and do it now. What the present insecure educators fail to understand is. thatthe vast majority of the public is four-square behind governments who do, or say they will do, what the Socreds and Heinrich are doing. If there was any-doubt about the people’s mood, the recent U.S. and Canadian federal elections should wipe them away. Both Ronald Reagan and Brain Mulroney campaigned on reduced- “government. costs platforms while their opponents spouted opposite positions. Reagan overcame slashing attacks on his age, nuclear ruthlessness, — religious fanaticism and general brainlessness in piling up one of the largest voting majorities ever amassed. Mulroney's gigantic majority was equally impressive. Recent polls indicate that close to 80 per cent of the population is’ Conservative by nature. The. Bennett and Mulroney governments know, or should know, that this Conservative majority exists and they need not-exert more than 20 per cent of their efforts to satisfying the loud mouths on the other side. The present hold-the-line stance should be maintained i in B. C. on education issues but in every government nook and crany, Heinrich: is correct to tell school districts there is no additional money for them to spend and that trustees will have to ies megencrs: pay within bounds. The sooner the radicals leading these. groups realize the gravy train. has ground to.a halt, that 80 per cent of the population is not on their side and that noisy lobbying will not be supported, the sooner this pro- ° vince and this country can begin the: ride back to sensible fiscal management, Horror tales concerning cuts to key education programs (like swim- ming, driving lessons, nature: studies, basket weaving) and. sanity: destroying, ov errand) classrooms. are eagerly per ted on. by asvm- pathetic press. ; Current criticisms of recent budget restrictions announcements iby o-- Education Minister Jack Heinrich are no exception. -.
