Estimated construction value such as the $243,700 figure released for April points to an optimistic future for White Rock as one of the top residential areas on the Lower Mainland, The demand for family dwellings in this district is definitely on the upswing and more homes mean more people and more revenue for White Rock. Paving and tarring of streets in the city, construction of | sidewaks and plans for land reclamation are making homes and } land more valuable. White Rock is slowly but surely takin the shape of a small city and not just a summer resort compo: of rough trails, a few stores and a number of shabby homes dd As Mayor William Hodgson recently pointed out, everyone watches to see how big the public works program is going to be, but few realize that this fund only gots what is left after all the other expenditures have been taken care of. White Rock taxes did not increase this year but we note | that Langley city’s budget will require taxpayers to pay taxes of 48.1 mills plus an additional levy for fire protection and local improvements such as sidewalks where they apply. This Tate is a 5.2 mill increase over 1958. It is true that Langley has been incorporated five years and While Rock only two but we ; Guides and Brownies from this stari are confident that with economic and sound Planning that the | residents of this city will not have to shoulder a tax burden that is too much for them in the future. Nowhere To Play Anyone in the vicinity of the Hilltop school grounds on Tuesday evening would have well realized the drastic need for | more recreaational facilities in White Rock | A bantam girls softball game was in Progress in the lower corner of the high school grounds. Some other youngsters were Practicing high jumping a short distance away A junior boys softball team was working out in the upper left hand corner of the grounds and one of White Rock’s Little League teams w: holding a practice on the upper right hand diamond. Down on the lower part of the elementary school grounds a Little League farm team was brushing up on the fundamentals of the game Not far away, at Semiahmoo Park, White Rock's Babe Was engaged in a league game and thus that park was made full use of. Ruth team | also being Tuesday evening’s activity was a classic example of White Rock's overcrowded and inadequate playground facilities, Tt isn't just happening Tuesdays though, it's happening nearly every night of the week. Teams that have no proper field to play } or practice on are making the best of a sloping gravel yard | which provides an undignified recreation area for more than | 1,000 schoo] children during the day White Rock faces a problem of too many active youngsters and too few recreatonal facilities Tt is a problem that will w rapidly and city council should waste no time in reclaim- ing land and carrying out any park developments which will | help alleviate the Present situation. | Fighting Arthritis Despite years of intensive Tesearch, scientists are still baf-| fled by one of the oldest diseases known to man - arthritis In an effort to discover the cause and ultimate cure of this crippler, greater emphasis will be put on arthritic research in| the future Through the B.C. Division of the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society, British Columbians are contributing fin ancially to this effort to the tune of $50,000 during 1959. | Rheumatoid arthritis in particular js getting a great dea) | of attention because it is one of the commonest forms of arthritis and has the greatest crippling powers, Research is presently being carricd out on a disease called Reiter's syndrome, which is a close cousin of rheumatoid arthritis. The reason for this - to carry the detection simile a little fur- ther - is that by investigating the relati ves, scientists hope they may learn something about the number one criminal, Dr. H. L. Taylor, head of the Department of Pashology at the University of British Columbia, is approaching the problem : from another angle, He is using an electron microséope to look } closely into the bricks and mortal out of which people's joints | are made. The electron microscope magnifies many times more power: fully than old microscopes and this ability to see the fine struc: ture should ultimately be of great value. Describing this greater magnification, the CARS Research Director said, “It is as though we used to try to read the nows- paper from across the room and could barely decipher the head. ™ lines. Now we haye it close at hand and hope to find now meen ing and knowledge in the fine print.” Dr. Taylor is working with another new type of mlcrosvope which uses ultra-violet rays, Although ultra-violet raya ure in- le, certain chemicals, when hit oy these rays, will give off a Bostloon light and thos become visible. ‘ pnt stage of research in arthritis is pot dramatic ee i “ painstaking, thorough followup of all possible ihe first to buy a packa | Girl Guide cookies at Hilito) Youth Centre May 5 Mayor William Hodgson was¢.strict united for th 40 ofcookie blitz 3 when ail 1 lingered to window shop on Hilltop the other day, always 4 pleasant occupation even at the end of the month - ene em dream surely?
