This meeting will be held im the| BRITISH COLUMBIA One year ago I had the pleasure of re-|as they did. near future and it is announced that | viewing the previous year’s work of the Board and the amount of work that was accomplished was a surprise to all of us, and even our critics, and it must be admitted we have a few, must have been compelled to acknowledge that while we may have made mistakes, a great deal of good work was accom- plished for the general advancement of Sidney and the district surrounding. This year I believe we can again con- gratulate ourselves upon the fact that the past year’s work has been excellent and of lasting benefit to the district. Among the most prominent undertak- ings handled by the Board during the past year was the establishment of the Military Camp at Sidney. The fact that we were instrumental in overcom- ing all obstacles put in our way to pre- vent the troops for overseas training here is sufficient alone to justify our existance, even if that was all the work we accomplished during the year. The Military Camp. I will presently again bring to your attention some of the work the Board has taken up and in many cases with good results. The matter of the milit- ary authorities making Sidney a sum- mer military training camp should not be passed over without mention. In my opinion, at least, it is the best work yet accomplished by the Board. The men who trained here will soon be leaving for the front, and it is expected that others will go into training here next summer. On the other hand there may not be any need for training more men. However, I am sure We.all earn- estly pray that such may be the case, but what I want most particularly to draw your attention to is the fact that nearly every one of the fifteen hundred men who were here will be acting as publicity agents for us without cost and will proglaim abroad the wonderful and umsurpassed climate of the district of North Saanich. I am sure we cannot overestimate the future advantages to be derived from last summer’s military camp. We than ard’’ Resthaven. You will no doubt recall that it is nearly a year since we first made an effort to interest the authorities and appraise them of the fact that we pos- sessed here a building which we claim- ed was very suitable for a hospital for our returned soldiers, and later when it came to our notice that more accom- modation was needed, we again took the matter up and this time we were successful, and I now believe that those who are in charge of this excellently managed institution, as well as its guests, are entirely satisfied that it is one of the best, if not the best in Can- ada. Reduced Fares For Soldiers. During the time the soldiers were in camp here we were able, from represen- tations made “by us to the various rail- roads, to secure a very much reduced fare for the boys in uniform. Sidney was honored by a visit while the troops were here from His Royal Highnegs the Duke of Connaught. Al- though the Board was in no way re- sponsable for the arrangements in con- nection with this visit, yet they co-op- erated with the officers in command to make the visit as pleasant as pos- sible. There were a great many other mat- ters of interest among the board's ac- tivities during the year, but I will only attempt to mention a few of the most important, such as the planting | of trees on Beacon Avenue and elsewhere and the necessary work in keeping them alive. We must admit, however, that crtdit for a preat deal of this good work must be given to Mr. Guy Walker, a valued member of the Board. Electric Railway Company, on made by the Board, acceeded to the request that the rail- way company place an agent in Sidney I am certain the action of the company has been very much appreciated. The Board have had considerable dif- ficulty in securing funds to pay for the lighting of Beacon Avenue during the past year, and I hope they will not be compelled to decline to renew the pres- ent contract owimg to this difficulty. The sewage drained from the grounds occupied by the Chinese Beacon Avenue into a sewer constructed Provincial two years ago and carried to an open ditch just west passed through the district, days that Sidney will be one of points selected for this purpose. During the year we dealt with many other subjects, including the recommen- dation of a health officer for Sidney, and we accepted an invitation and sent our representatives to attend a meeting of a committee of the Victoria Board of Trade which was attended by many representative men from other parts of the “The best results are obtained WHEN THE LIPS ARE VERY CLOSE TO THE TELEPHONE.
