MULCHING PREVENTS Pe EROSION Ww le the leaves of lawns, vegetables and most flowers do- mand sunshine, and lots of it, researchers agree that shade on the soil over their roots is good for practically all plants. At first glance this might seem a difficult prescription to fill, * but it can be done by covering the soil with a mulch. The latest argument in be- half of mulching is that it pre- vents erosion, A goyernment bulletin. says: “Raindrops come hurtling out of the sky and hit the soil so hard that the soil is splashed up on your lettuce. Scientists have measured the splash and found that it may he as high as two feet. Then, the detach. ed soil may be carried off in the water which has accumulat- ed from the rain, Or, those fine Particles of soil in the water will settle down into the pores of the soil and fill them up. That will prevent the water | soaking into the soil as rapidly | @s it should. When water docs not soak into the soil it accum- ulates on the surface and ul- timately has to flow somewhere, Luckily, there is something rains are allowed.to penetrate the soil. like a mulch of this kind ‘THURSDAY, JUNE 18, 1959 Garden E. Sery ‘to the soil gently . It keeps the Weeds down and lowers the soil temperature in the hot summer days and helps conserve the moisture that goes into the soil. _ Paper mulch, and even stones and slabs of concrete have been experimented with. But tesis by the Ohio State experimental station, emphasizing the import- ance of soil aeration, indicate that the best mulching materiais allow free circulation of air through the top eight inches of soil. Mulches of fresh organic material, such as manure, straw, alfalfa, peat moss, lawn clip pings and others, stabilize the granular structure of soils and prevent surface compaction. Excellent results can be ob- tained. from a heavy mulch of dry lawn ¢tlippings, applied a little at a time: plication should be well mixed with the top soil; and then it may be built up to several in- ches in thickness, so that weeds are kept down and evaporation checked, but at the same time Tomatoes especial the average gardener can do about raindrop or splash eros: ! ion. his garden ten, we can’t get the straw or it costs too much. Luken, of 990 Finlay Street, has threatened to take action against the city if the hill on Pacific Avenue, between B and Finlay Street is not clos- ed to traffic. Mr. Luken claims speeding back will act as a tonic and result in strong, bushy plants. When the top central shoot or top buds are pinched off,: the plant will develop side growth in the axils of the leaves. There will also be more flowers and a longer season of bloom, Among the annuals which are benefitted by pinching back are stock, snapdragons, marigolds and zinnias. Such plants should be pinched back when they are 6 to 10 inches high There are, however, some an: jnuals which do not respond to this treatment Among them ure asters, everlastings, nico- lana, celosia and popp' tain biennials such as bury bells and foxgloves, o lresent being pinched back. Ald. John Hynds agreed that ||f from his observation sone youths have been using the hill as a speedway and can barely keep to the road at the bottom of the hill. He urged Council to erect Caution signs on the hill, or limit the speed limit. Ald. Sid Fennell pointed out the speed limit within the city is already 30 miles an hour and if that were adhered to there | would be no danger. Council felt there were other hills in White Rock just as steep as Pacific. No action will be taken by the city. Gas & Oi © FREE ESTIMATES 12822 N.
