—_s FATHER’S DAY _ Mini tractor project takes Gardner back to farm days _ It took four years of dedica- tion and ingenuity for the presi- dent of the Saanich Historical Artifacts Society to recreate a piece of farm machinery from his childhood. By GLENN WERKMAN Review Staff Writer Art Gardner, 76, recently completed a one-third scale model of the 1912 Sawyer-— Massey tractor he spent many hours working on as a boy on . the family farm in Harris, Sask. The original was: an 82- -horsepower steam traction trac- tor-and was bought by Gard- ner’s father. and uncle when Gardner was one year old. “dT never had any blueprints,”’ he says. Most of the tractor was built on machinery in Gardner’s workshop. A ship’s tool room lathe with a four-foot bed was used to machine many of the components. A_ milling machine, welder. and drill press -: were also used in the manufac- turing process. The boiler was made to code qualifications after being designed by a pressure tester designer, Gardner says. The on- ly other components not made in Gardner’s workshop are the retread rubber tires and some. gears he rescued from a scrap piles: ‘Actually, that’s what got me Started, because the. gears became available to me,”’ Gard- ner said. ‘‘I was: literally born and brought up: in the steam. era, and it.stayed with me, as it has for other people.’ The. working scale. model is made from a variety of scrap -.- parts. The pressure gauge was taken from the first acetylene welding unit Gardner bought, back in 1934. The flywheel is cast iron, and machined to the proper specifications. Brand new fully qualified steel was: used to build all the pressure-related parts, Gardner says. The tractor weighs about ~ AFTER. FOUR YEARS in the workshop, 1,200 Ib. — so Gardner had a bit of a chore removing it from the workshop once it was finish- ed. The door was too narrow for it.to fit through, so a win- dow was removed, ramps were built and the tractor was raised up on stands. It only tooka few minutes for Gardner to back the through the window frame and down the ramps once everything was in place. A few bugs had to be worked out once the tractor was put on the road. The engine speed was designed to put out about 250 t.p.m. and the gears used gave it a maximum speed of three m.p.h., which proved to be a lit- tle too fast. Gardner plans on changing the gears to reduce the top speed to about.two m.p.h.
