Road looks like any other mechanic
shop.

Parked cars wait for someone to re-
pair their mechanical guts. Men in
grease-smeared coveralls with
equally greasy hands tinker under
hoods.

But, look a little closer and you'll
see philosophers at work here.

It’s the sign that gives these witty

thinkers (cleverly disguised as
grease monkeys) away. > -

years after Jim Craig left the shop,
said he doesn’t know where the tradi-
tion of putting up amusing quotes
each week came from. It’s just some-
thing they’ve always done.

Birthdays of unfortunate souls ac-
quainted with the mechanics have
been known to make their way onto
the sign.

And advertising for mind-expand-
ing events like JazzFest have graced
the sign for motorists to peruse on
their way by.

“One guy told me he drives by
here for the sole purpose of seeing
the sign,” said Schaerer. “It makes
his day just seeing it.”

Schaerer keeps track of each.
phrase and when it was up, just in
case he doesn’t have something new
that week and.needs to reuse one.

But that’s probably a rare event be-
cause there are quite a few contribu--
tors. According to Schaerer, garage.
owner Duncan Gurton is the wag be- -
hind many of the wise tidbits.
