For the past few years Art and Edith Gardner, 11145 Heather Road, have been raising show class Highland cattle. This spring five new calves were born on their timbered farm. ‘‘Unfortunately we are putting them all up for sale, that includes the entire herd,’’ Mrs. Gardner told The Review. ‘‘The price of feed has just gone sky g that high and we both think it’s time to part with them.” . simply purchase one or more Highland ‘*It won’t be the same around here without them “+ cattle, and turn them loose. though,”’’ she said. So far less than 8,000 of the 23,000 hunters contacted have responded, far below the expectations of branch of- ficers, Good wildlife management is based on knowledge of the needs of the resource, in- formation that can only be obtained by the collection and study of a wide variety of facts and aspects of the animals involved. Hunters are in an excellent posi.ion to provide a great deal of this information. Their contribution of data could provid: the greatest volume of knowledge available _on any given population. The wildlife biologist and his Staff regard data obtained from hunters as an important component of the overall wildlife resource management plan, itis of vital Page 9 a Page’ S HUNTSMEN EXHIBIT POOR RESPONSE significance in determining the extent of consumptive use of the wildJife. It is of par- ticular importance at this time when the regional wildlife management development plan is in a transitional stage between general application of an overall regional policy, to the more sophisitirated intensive manaement of the region by watershed management units. If only one-third of the data from consumptive users is available, then the management, based on this data, will only be one-third as valid as it should be. The Vancouver Island Zone of the B.C.
