AND ISLANDS SIDNEY Se - Vol. 11, No. 40 —_— tee a THE SIDNEY AND ISLANDS as -_—— — -——— REVIEW, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1918 in getting the right of way. I would make a gift of a site on my place to facil- itate it. The coming month wotld be fine for an examination. Yours truly, John Dean Mr. White. said he thought there was something in the proposal. There were a series of small lakes at that place with quite a stream running into them. The Secretary said he was told that the little lakes were never known to run dry even during this summer. The only question for the Board was whether it would appoint a committee to wait upon the Minister of Lands in the matter. Mr. White said they had not got enough water in Sidney. He had spoken on the same subject some months ago, pointing out that ships which came here had to beg for water, whereas if they had suffi- cient to supply all the ships that would take it, it would be a useful source of revenue as the ships would take all they could get and pay anything for it. At present, at much loss and inconvenience, ships had to weigh anchor, lose tides, etc., to get water elsewhere. The Chairman said he thought it right the letter should be acknowledged, but they were unable to take any steps in the matter at present. After further discussion Mr. G. Cochrane said that the Secretary should be appointed to wait upon the Minister of Lands and to ask Rim to appoint an Engineer to in- vestigate the possibilities of their obtain- ing g:- water supply for Sidney. Mf White said they must appoint a committee, as we have not a sufficient water supply for the local industries. It was then agreed that Messrs Walton, Mayhew and Dawes be appointed to wait upon the Minister of Lands concerning the water question. Dawes, Esq., Secretary, Board of Trade, ceived from Mr. Mcintosh regarding the Sidney, B.C. visit of the Hon. Mr. Carvell to Sidney if possible. It was deemed unwise to hold a public meeting in Sidney, owing to the prevalence of iafluenza, and public meet- would probably be prohibited by the pub- lic health officers. The Secretary said he had found out Dear Sir:— We are today in receipt of a letter from The Deputy Minister of the Naval Service stating: Reverting to my letter of August 29th in the matter of the request of the Victoria British Columbia Board of Trade that the exportation of fresh clams from British Columbia be prohibited, and also that a close season for clam digging be established, the following amendment to section 5 of the Special Fishery Regula- tions for the Province of British Colum- bia was adopted on the 12th inst:— (d) ‘‘The export from Canada of clams in a raw or fresh state, taken in the Pro- vince of British Columbia, !s prohibited. (e) ‘No one shall dig for or take clams except for use as bait, in deep-sea fishing, or for domestic use, but not for sale or barter, from the Ist day of June to the last day of July, in each year, both days inclusive.”’ We congratulate you upon your initiat- ing this matter which has concluded 80 satisfactorily. Street Lighting The Street Lighting Committee reported it had a sufficient surplus to carry on with for a further short period. The contract for the street Hghting expired in January next. The Secretary said he thought it ought to be mentioned that the Women’s Institute had assisted the Committee with the pro- ceeds of a dramatic entertainment and Mrs. Critchley had raffled a cushion on be- half of the fund, for which help the Com- mittee was very grateful. THE WATER QUESTION able to visit Sidney, so, in company with Mr. Walton they called on him in Victoria. He gave them a nice reception and heard all they wished to say. He had not raised any objections. They took up the question of the dredging of the pond, and the present need of repairs to the Government wharf, which Mr. Carvell said was a matter’ which should be seen to. Important Proposal sent to him at Ottawa when he would give them his consideration. He desfred to do his best for Sidney. The Secretary submitted the following heads for the draft of his appeal to Mr. Carve}! :— The Secretary read the following letter: Illahie, September 29th, 1918 W. H. Sidney is the nearest town to James Island, the traffic between has been carried on with difficulty and now only at intervals which is a serious loss to the district as well as great inconvenience to the workers on the Island. The draft of the letter was approved and the Secretary was instructed to send it to the Hon. Mr. Carvell. Associated Boards The Secretary was authorised to pay the subscription of $5.00 to the Associated Boards of Trade of Vancouver Island. Trees for Roads Application had been made to the Vic- toria Council for 60 shade trees for the roads. The Park Superintendent had re- plied that the matter be left over until October, as more trees might then be required. Mr. White drew attention to the advan- tage of trees being planted on Second St. and round the boundary of the lumber mill, which would not only beautify the mill property but form a valuable protec- tion against the possible spread of a fire if it broke out at the mill, The Secretary said residents had to make application for shade trees, to be planted on the streets in front of their residences, they had to plant them and to take care of them. Mesre Walton, Lesage and the Secre- tary were appointed a committee, on the lines of Mr. White's suggestion and to ap- ply for more trees. Vietory Loan The Secretary reperted he had received @ letter frem Mr. Joseph Kingham; ‘chair: man of the Victoria and District com- mittee of the Victory Ldan. He had since noticed in the Press that the matter had been left to the Sidney Board of Trade, but he had received no definite proposal. Continued on Page 5 Mail the Review weekly to your friends.
