Miss Jennie Lindsay, of Seattle, is
spending a few weeks in Sidney visiting
her aunt, Mrs.\J. Nelson.

who will be collecting them next month

Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Coombe and Mr
W. H. Spaulding, of Victoria, who are
on a yachting cruise called in at Sic:
ney on Monday.

The Misses Gladys and Thelma Spen-
cer, of Victoria, spent a short holiday
in Sidney last week, the guests of
Miss Hazel Pfister.

The Allies Chapter, I. O. D. E., will
hold their regular monthly meeting on
Tuesday afternoon, September 3th, at
3.30 p. m., in the Berquist Rooms.

Mr. <A. Duncan, superintendent of
construction on the B. C. Electric, was
in town Tuesday with a gang of men
installing a sixty-five horse power mo-
tor for the CanadianKelp Products,
Limited.

Things are looking up down around
the V. & S. station. A new sidewalk
has been laid this week connecting up
the station platform with Beacon av-
enue: Well, it was badly needed as the
old one certainly needed repairs.

Mrs. Prince and Miss Phipps, of Van-
couver, spent last week with Mr. and
Mrs. J. Nicol, Third Street. They en-
joyed their outing very much and think
Sidney a most delightful place to
spend a short holiday.

Mrs. W. J. Bowcott has always car-
ried a full line of school supplies for th
ehildren and this term she has a larger
and better stock than ever and the
ehildren will do well to call there for
what they meed to start school on
Tuesday with.

The many friends of Mr. Bert Read-
ings, Bazan Bay, will be pleased to
hear that the operation he underwent
at St. Coseph’s Hospital, Victoria, on
Friday morning last has proved suc-
cessful and he is now slowly on his
way to recovery..

Miss Margaret Simister, who obtain-
ed her teacher’s certificate at the last
examinations held in Victoria, left Sid-
ney on Tuesday to take charge of a
school ‘near Cranbrook, B. C. She was
accompanied as far as Vancouver by
her father, Mr. J. F. Simister.

Miss Lorna White and Miss Kilpat-
rick, who has been visiting the Misses

White for the past two months, will
leave Wancouver on Sunday for the
Goldstream Ramch in the Okanagan

Valley where they will engage in fruit
picking.

The schools, both Superior and pub-
lic will open in Sidney on Tuesday
morning next. Miss Dorothy Hay will
again be in charge of the Superior
school, Miss Terry will have charge of
the higher grades in the public school
and Miss Ross will assume charge of
the younger children.

One of the carpenters working on the
new buildings being erected on James
Islamd yesterday had the misfortune to
fall from the top. scaffolding to the
basement thereby receiving very serious
injuries. He was brought over in the
company-s launch and rushed to Vic-
toria by the ambulance which was in

waiting here on the arrival of the
boat.

A cabblage weighing twenty-one
pounds is by no means an ordinary

sized vegetable to be grown in the
North Saanich district. This magnific-
ent vegetable was grown by Mr. Bran-
son in the garden plot owned by Miss
Houghton at Small Dole, and although
it is of unusual size and weight yet it
received no more attention than the
other vegetables in the plot and has
received no waler except the “ittle that

fell from the clouls during the past
summer.
Pte. Harry Ego, ‘of Edmonton, who

joined. the 202nd Battalion at that city
as bugler, going into training for near-
ly a year at Calgary and left for Eng-

land in May, I16, amd left for France

shortly after his arrival there. Later
he was transferred from bugler to priv-
“gato-in “the” 10th-Battalion,~--has -been-
wounded, according to word recvived
by his sister, Miss Etta Ego, who re-
sides here, but no authentic informat-
ion as to how serious it is has been re-
ceived. Pte. Ego
Angus Ego, of this town and his many
friends hope that the wounds will not
prove serious.

The Board of Trade will meet on
Tuesday evening next in the usual place

Miss Dagmore Stokkelbye left for
Victoria this week where she will at-
tend school during the coming term.

Mr. Walter Thompson, of Saanichton
was among the many visitors to town
on Tuesday of this week.

Mr. M. Dean, of the firm of Dean
Bros., Heating, prominent poultry rais-
ers and dealers, paid a business visit
to Sidney on Tuesday last.

Mrs. Johnson, who has been spending
a few weeks’ holiday at the home of
her brother, Mr. J. Readings of Bazan
Bay, returned to her mission work in
Tacoma this week.

At the annual meeting of the Sidney
Water and Power Gompany held on
Monday Messrs. F. O'Reilly, T. Meri-
dith and Alyard, of Victoria, were
elected directors for the ensuing year.

Messrs. T. Bennett, Stanley Robson,
George Paddon, David Bennett, J. W.
Bennett and J. C. Campbell, of Mayne
Island were in town Wednesday on
their way to Victoria on a little trip,
combining business with pleasure.

A serious accident occurred at the
Sidney Mills on Wednesday morning to
Mr. Thomas Woolery who is a mill-
wright in the employ of the company.
While using a pinch bar in some man-
ner it became caught—_in _a pully and
in making its flight through space it
struck Mr. Woolery on the chest in-
flicting a serious wound. He was car-
ried from the@works to Beacon avenue
and taken by automobile to Dr. Bavis
who gave him immediate attention.
Mr. Woolery: passed a fairly good night
but the doctor considers it necessary
for him to be taken to the hospital to-
day. Mr. Woolery ‘1as reen a resident
of Sidney for the past three months
and was considered a careful and con-
scientious workman.

SYNOPSIS OF COAL MINING REGULA-
TIONS.

Manitoba,
Yukon

rights of the Dominion, in
Saskatchewan and Alberta, the
Territory, the North-West Territories
and in a portion of the Province of British
Columbia, may be leased for a ‘term of twenty
one years at an annual rental of $1 an acre.
No more than 2,560 acres will he leased
one applicant.

Ajaplication for a lease must be made by
the appHeant in person to the Agent or Sub-
Agent of the district in which the rights ap-
pled for are situated.

In surveyed territory the land must be de-
;scrihed by sections, or legal sub-divisions of
sections, and in unsurveyed territory the tract
applied for shall be staked out by the applic-
ant himself.

Each application must be accompanied by a
fee of $5 which will be refunded if the rights
applied for are not available, but not others
wise. A royalty shall be paid on the merch-
antable output of the mine at the rate of five
cents per ton.

The person oporating the mine shall furnish
the agent with sworn returns accounting for
the full quantity of merchantable coal mined
and pay the royalty thereon. If the coal
mjning rights are not boing oporated, auch re-
turns should be furnished at least once a year.

The lease will {include the coal mining
rights only, but the lessee may he permitted
to purchase whatever available surface rights
may be considered necessary for the working
of the. sine atthe rate of $10 per acre.

made to the Secretary of the Department of
the Interior, Ottawa, or to any Agent or Sub-
Agent of Dominion Landa.
