Soap-Box Derby
Gains In Popularity
At Brentwood

The Soap-Box Derby, a favor-
ite sport in Eastern. Canada and
the United States, is fast gaining
popularity in Brentwood.

Starting recently with two
would-be speedway artists, the
number of interested parties have

now reached 12.
Races are staged. regularly.

over a tricky course on Verdier
Road, and competition is keen as
the boys prepare to crown a
champion.

In the United States, the annual
Soap-Box Derby draws thousands
of spectators from some of the
larger centres, with a cup going
to the winner and suitable awards
to those that come within the
placing number set by the judges.

NEW USE FOR
CASTOR OIL?

Castor ‘oil, of hated childhood
memory, is. blossoming forth in a
new role. Thanks to the paint. in-
dustry, this once-disliked product
of the castor bean is being put to
-use in ways which are far removed
from the medicine cabinet.
Increased .: interest of paint
manufacturers in the properties
‘of the castor bean sprang largely

from ‘the effects of the ‘Jong
drawn - out. Sino-Japanese war

which did much to cut off sup-
plies of the tung oil which for
many years had been deemed an
essential part of paint manufac-
ture. An overwhelming propor-
tion of the world’s supply of tung.
oil-used to come from China.
Cutting off much of that supply
turned paint men toward possible
substitutes—including eastor
which was already gaining some.

acteristics of . the oil. could be

merely a substitute for tung oil

CUB NEWS

The ‘Pack held their regular
meeting on Friday with 25 Cubs

present. Shultz, Tinkie Barnes,
Kelsey, Christian, Stenton and

Gardner made their Promise and
were invested as Cubs. Knotting
and First Aid instruction was
viven and ball-throwing — tests
passed. Good gumes were held
and the meeting closed with pray-
ers. Good hunting!

Peck” resumed her regular run
on Monday after the annual over-
haul at Victoria Machinery Depot.

Six new cylinder heads were
fitted and other repair work done.
Work was completed at 2.30 on
Sunday morning and at 4.30 p.m.
