Post Office Dept., Ottawa Subscription (in advance) Canada $2.50 per year; U.S.A. $3.50 Solution to Park Problem The most feasible solution to the problems of parks on the Lower Mainland seems to lie in the establishment of a metro- politan park system. White Rock may not be able to afford an extensive park development program at the present time but we are inclined to agree with Ald. John Hynds when he states this city would get a good deal from the metropolitan system Thousands of tourists from all parts of the continent use White Rock and Crescent beaches and Semiahmoo Park eve: year so why should White Rock and Surrey pay the full cost of development and upkeep? It is interesting to note that the report on Metropolitan parks presented to the Metropolitan Joint Committee in Vancou- ver in February of this year states that White Rock and Cres- cent beaches are included in the existing metropolitan parks plan. Possible metropolitan park system includes White Rock and Crescent beaches, Semiahmoo Indian Reserve, Grauer Beach, Sandspit and Tsawwassen Indian Reserve. The report says that White Rock needs to preserve land now for recreational! development. Much of the city's unbuilt land has already been subdivided into smaller lots. The standard for parks in the city is a little below the average for the metro: politan area as a whole. The beach area provides most of the recreational facilities in the city the city will probably haye to go outsde its boundaries to attain a sufficient number of parks. Here is a percentage of visitors who make use of our beach and park areas every ye Vancouver, 3612; New Westminster, 17; B.C. Interior 15; Surrey (including White Rock), 912; Burna 734; U.S.A., 6; rest of Canada, 8% percent White Rock's waterfront receives considerable mention in this report. While the beach at White Rock is already used extensively, further development would do much to enhance its attractiveness as a recreation area. Many kinds of development are possible — changing rooms, protected areas for small child- ren and the construction of a marina — haye been suggested by the Lower Mainland Regional Planning Board. In conjunc- tion with park development on the Semiahmoo Indian Reserve ths area could become a playground for the whole metropolitan region. Lower Mainland Regional Planning Board describes the 314 acre Semiahmoo Indian Reserve ase a “perfect park site.” It is almost all usable for park purposes. Surrey municipality cannot afford to develop the park itself, but it took a five year lease on 250 acres of the reserve in 1957 in order to prevent private development for other purposes The municipality is picking up other leases as they expire with the idea that some kind of metro. politan park authority may be formed which could aid in the expense of the park’s development. White Rock spent only 39 cents per capita on park development in 1957, the year of in-| corporation. Surrey spent 85 cents in 1951, 78 cents in 1954 and 138 in 1957. Vancouver spent $2.04, $2.76 and $3.49 respectively during those three years. New Westminster spent $2.99, $3.2: and $3.86 This report indicates that White Rock and Surrey would be in very favorable positions to receive aid under a metropoltan park system City and municipal council will be wise to continue 2 push for establishment of such an overall park development which would provide adequate parks and recreational facilities to these areas at a low cost to the local taxpayer. Well Done, Teen Towne a y The wife of a prominent White Rock professional man agreed rather reluctantly to billet three teenage boys during the three day Teens Associated Conference held in this city last week. She probably felt just as many other adults felt when they were asked to house Teen Towners from other B.C. centres. She no doubt asked her husband “do we want to be responsible for somebody else's teenagers for several days?” This particular lady was sorry after the boys left. Sorry that she didn’t take six instead of three teenagers. Her billets may have been exceptional, but they were up bright and early inthe mornjng, made their beds, cooked breakfast, did the dishes and even watched the children, Not bad for “somebody else's kids.” We think White Rock should be proud of its own Teen Town for proving such excellent hosts and proud of its young British Calumbians for conducting themselves so well during the Con ference, The Teen Towners carried out their business and soc ia) program in a mature and responsible manner and we under. stad the general behaviour of these 250 delegates was very com mendable. Politicians can procrastinate to not say yea or nay. To keep the people's interest, they string them along, By being non-commital you can't say that they are wrong.
