A2 PENINSULA NEWS REVIEW _ t.Patrick’s day, and a S cheery good mornin’ ‘to y'all! Lots to talk about this week. For one _ thing it’s getting around to ‘time. to prune the roses ... one’ ‘of the most: nerve- wracking jobs in the gar- den! You know you're going to get stabbed, but you don’ t know just when! Let’s begin with Hybrid tea roses. Before you start do sharpen your secateurs, and if your bushes are old with great thick stalks, the loppers as well. Don a thick jacket and the heaviest gloves you can find. A scarf tying. back your hair. is strongly recommienece for women! Your aim is to remove dead or. damaged wood, take out the weaker. of - crossed branches, and. to: - shorten remaining canes to. open up the centre of your bushes to sunshine. and good air Circulation: Take. out.weak canes sight back’: -. to their origin. You should end. up. with ke about five. healthy canes, - anywhere. from two to three: i ie Orci feet in height, always mak- ing your pruning cuts just above an outward facing leaf bud. Floribundas and rugosa roses may be left with many more branches, simply shortening them somewhat, and removing dead wood, and weak stalks. Climbing roses are pruned immedi-: ately after flowering ceases, thinning out weak branches, shortening stalks that are. getting too long and removing dead or dam- aged twigs. I hope this awesome task leaves you relatively un- harmed, :with just the odd “Band-Aid” to. remind peo- ple you've. been through “the war of the roses.’ There have been a lot of calls this week, a sure sign: . that spring’is almost here. Kay M. has an arbutus ’ unedo that is getting large, and she wants to prune it... . ‘There doesn’t seem to be — much information in’ my books, so the suggestion: is” that she should never re-" move more than one third: : ofa active ve growth j in any, one year. Philida 3B. loves lilies, _and is going to plant a lot of them. in one corner of her garden. She so inspired me ° that I bought five Stargazers _ put them all in one large pot. Lilies need perfect drainage, which is why ours - are all in. pots. too late to dormant spray her fruit trees and her roses -which are leafing out. These beautifully scented vines aren't reliably winter- hardy here, but we haven't had a lot of frost this winter. Browning tips.are also a sign of lack of water, but this year? | don’t think so! I'd just remove the brown tips of vines down to green. wood, and see what happens, Eric. He also has a lot of daf . fodils which have put up “greenery, but no flower buds. This is possibly the result of eggs laid by the “narcissus fly. These flies lay eggs. onthe soil surface next to daffodil bulbs.’ The — into. grubs eggs. hatch = which migrate to the bulb centre and destroy the em- bryo flower. I have the same croblen: so will dig up a bloom-less . bulb and cut it open to see what’s going on:. Ann R. wonders if she dare ‘transplant: a heather Wednesday, March 17, 1999 that’s in bloom. If she will dig up the plant with enough earth around it that roots aren’t damaged, it should be safe. Rob S. wondered if it is too soon to plant grass. It probably would be okay, but I'd be inclined to wait until the end of the month when, hopefully, these heavy rains will) cease. Grass seed would be washed into-pools right now. April rains are usually gentler, and. the _ ground a little warmer. Sonia T. wondered when she should divide her beau-. tiful Hostas ... spring or fall? According to my_ books, spring.is the time.. Chris called to report seeing a bumblebee in his garden and a honey bee around his camellias. He was relieved to see any bees at all after hearing the hor- ror. stories about the virus - that’s killing doméstic bees. - Along the same: lines Dick E. wants information about those wonderful polli- nators, the Blue Orchard © -.
