World sugar supplies are still below re- quirements but stocks have im- proved sufficiently to allow an increase. The increase to household con- sumers will amount to three pounds of sugar per person dur- ing the remainder of 1916. Two extra coupons will become valid in September, and the remaining coupon on or about Dec. 5. This means that five sugar coupons in the new Ration Book No. 6 will be declared valid on Sept. 19, two sugar coupons will become vaiid in October, three in Novem- ber, and three in December. It was felt that by annoucing the increased sugar ration at this time housewives might possibly increase their home canning knowing that they could replace the extra sugar used with the coupons becoming valid in Sep- tember. By means of a supplemen- tary authorization in the third quarter. the increased amount to industrial users will be in the following proportions . to their 1941 sugar usage: soft drink and confectionery manufacturers, 65 per cent; biscuit and cereal man- ufacturers, 70 per cent; bakers, 75 per cent. In the fourth quar- ter the industrial users’ sugar allotment in the three classes will be respectively 70, 75 and 80 per cent. The sugar increase to quota users (hotels, restaurants, lum- ber camps, ete.) will be made in the fourth quarter and will be equivalent to the total increase allowed industrial users in that quarter. In any weight-reducing pro- gram it is essential that the diet be based on normal food habits. but that it be below normal re- quirements in energy-producing foods.
