A motion by Betty Powell to commend North Saanich council for its rcfusal to be involved finan- cially with Blue Heron. Park sparked -a spirited defence of ‘the board’s policy and actions. The motion was made after society chairman Gcorge McKimm presented his report to the association, saying the first few months as a director of the society he thought everyone in Sidney, North Saanich and Victoria was bent upon the Socicty’s destruc- uion. “Now, there are only a few people who want to destroy us,” he continued. “The vast majority of the individuals in Sidney and North Saanich are extremely sup- portive and helpful. “T only wish I could say the same thing about the District of If the Memorial Park Socicty had paid the piper, members would be singing a different tune, says North Saanich Mayor Linda . Michaluk. By VALORIE LENNOX Review Staff Writer Responding to criticism of @ North Saanich by socicty mem-_ bers, Michaluk said the district has already contributed almost $182,000 towards Blue Heron Park and the adjoining Track 86: North Saanich which is moving in the oppoosile direction com- pletely.” Reported were the completion of the new running track, preparation of the playing ficlds by the school board and a $75,000 grant from lottery funds made by the provin- cial government. McKimm also reported that cubs from the district, together with many of their fathers, planted several thousand Douglas firs and western red: cedars on the park land. Construction work, under the supervision of Andreas Boas, resulted in the completion of a parking arca for about 60 cars, the installation of water lines, the erec- lion an identifying sign at the park — entrance, installation of some 13,000 feet of. draintile and com- pletion of two trails covering 3,700 fect in length. Plans for this year include the. addition of 10 picnic tables to be constructed by the students of Parkland School, the: installation “T assume the chairman of the Memorial Park Society is not aware of the value of the contribu- tion made by North Saanich,” said Michaluk, ~ “Mery often, when people get something for nothing, they assume that is the value of i it, That is nat truc in this case.” The municipality gave 26 acres of park Jand,; valued at $164,150, to the society in 1986, Michaluk said. North Saanich had acquircd ° the Jand tom the provincial gov- of .an irrigation system for the playing ficlds, blacktopping the first S00 feet of road into the park and finishing the trail system. ~~ McKimm also said, however, that, “The saddest part of this report is the clear indication from the mayor and council of the District of North Saanich that they are not prepared to assist with the operation of the park and they have turned down nearly every request that we have made to them for assistance. “The last request was that they provide water to the park free of charge and this has been turned down flatly....this organization docs not have the funds to pay for the maintenance of park facilities. “All we can do is provide the facility and then the maintenance: must be provided by volunteer groups or by municipalities. “Itis my view” said McKimm, “that it is not possible for this work to be done by volunteer goups because they do not have sufficient funds and “they can’t e North Saanich paid plenty towards park, says mayor “ernment in. 1968 for $1 on the condition the property be reserved for park.
