A MAN WHO ENJOYS HIS WORK

the local RCMP detachment.

There is one member of the
Sidney RCMP who has taken a
full course in the art of
Karate.

“The day after I came off
the course I got into a real
knock ‘em down drag ‘em out
fight in the Somas beer

Like the majority of his
colleagues on the force Tom is
in excellent physical shape,
though rarely is he called upon
to use force in his work.

A man who obviously enjoys
his job Tom said if he had to
leave the RCMP he would
want to join another police
force. :

“I love the work,’’ he said.
“There’s nothing else I’d want
to do. When I was at school I
remember a policeman came
and talked to us. It made quite
an impression.”’

Today Tom spends a good
deal of his own time talking to
local students and describes to
them the advantages of being
in the RCMP.

“] think it’s a very rewar-
ding career....in this sort of
work all it takes is for one
person to say ‘thank you’ for
me -to feel it’s all worth
while,’’ he said.

Tom who has been with the
force a total of 10 years has
resided in Sidney for the past

four and a half years. Due for
a transfer soon, he has applied
for a tour of duty in the Arctic,

“T hope I am posted up
there,” he said. “I enjoy
hunting and there most of your
work is in wilderness coun-
try.”

In 1969 Tom was awarded a
commendation for bravery
when he disarmed a man who
had a revolver out and ready
to use during a family dispute.
Constable Brown declined to
draw his own weapon during
that incident.

“You know what you’re
faceing if you make too many
fast moves....you’re dead.
It’s that simple,” he said, “I
just kept talking to this fellow
and finally he gave the
weapon up.”

Tom, says he has enjoyed
his work here.

“This is a good town,” he
said. ‘There are lots worse

places to work in.”

S.P. BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION

The Basketball Jamboree 1 planned the jamboree and

sponsored by the Saanich
Peninsula’ Basketball
Association on November 28,
29, at Cordova Bay Com-
munity Hall, was considered a
great success, With a larger
representation of young
children than previous years,
the 2-day tournament handled
over 300 kids between the ages
of 8 and 16 years.

No winners were declared,
but the outstanding player
awards were distributed as
follows: outstanding girl:
Sherrie McCulloch,  out-
standing boy, (shared): Allen
Benn, Jamie Shipitka, Chris
Bryant. Congratulations are

Central Saanich council
approved an application by
Eldon Chapman to connect
with the sewer system ex-
tended by Mr. G. Rogers.

Council had previously
ammended the bylaw at
Rogers’ request, allowing him
to extend the existing sewer
system.

Rogers was on hand at the
meeting Monday to say he had
no objections to Chapman
hooking into his system.

But Alderman Lamont
pointed out that, in his opinion,
it did not seem right for one
party to pay to have the sewer
system extended and another
party simply hooks into it,
