The threefold activities of man—-personal, industrial and so- 'cial—-must be ministered to by the school. The prime necessity of in- dustrial intelligence and efficiency has been discussed and an argument formulated in favor of Manual Train- ‘ing as the means to industrial effi ciency. Sc. Article Six a call for many school activities to centre around that industry, not Qnly with a view to increased indus- trial efficiency, hut with the aim that any control exercised by the community over. that industry (wages, living conditions, etc.) may be wisely based upon sound knowl- efge if the main features of the in- dustry (features such as competitors, axisting and probable markets). From the worker’s point of view, for example, how absurd for boys to en- ter industry without having had some little reading on the history and meaning of the trade movement! _ Technical efficiency of the citizen demands that he shall be sufficiently Interested to read and discuss ques- ‘fons of working conditions, costs of administration, pros and cons of na- tlonal ownership and control, meth- ods of road-making, systems. of jtreet lighting, irrigation plans costs and advantages. This interest is best awakened by bringing the pupil into Contact with some Manual Craft woodwork, from which his interests will naturally spread and grow to ‘mbrace the history of that (and ther) crafts, until the ever-widen- ng circle embraces all the activities f his fellow-toilers. When this ider interest is aroused, the wider nd deeper knowledge will follow, nd never was the need of such nowledge more evident than it is today, when governments dally with vital questions because there is no enlightened force to demand definite arogress and point out the path. An gutstanding example of this is seen fn the present state of our educa- -ional system. The majority are Uissatisfied but make no definite de- made for change in specified direc- ifons. .And why is the demand not dormulated and pushed? To put the matter bluntly it is because the citi- zen of today has been 80 educated that he {fs not able to intelligently formulate his ideas of the purposes of education. In other words, he was not trained to take his part in the great co-operative task of edu- cating the next generation. He passed through school, learned arith- metic, grammar, geography, history, gte., etc., but (the frony of it!) Jearned nothing about the citizens fluty to educate posterity—or how to carry out that duty. Other co-operative tasks there are per which the school should prepare the citizen. There ls, for example. the co-opetative fight against dis- pase. With a whole massa of statis- ‘Ics at hand to show us how tubercu- “losis, smallpox, diphtheria, cancer have grown or decreased, wfth wealth of figures on which to form judgments regarding methods ‘of control, we still persist in centering an arithmetic around figure-manipu- lations that are a’ drag on tha teacher and a misery to the child. What a wealth of arithmetical work lies in our provincial statistics of the lumber induatry—the damage. by fire, the effect of government con- trol and private offort. Why not contre our arithmetical work around tleso ‘live’? subjects, awakening thus a keen interest in social dutles pHnd developing the ability to apply afithmetical ability to the “inspect- ing’ of soclally controlled industry? union ‘ 100 omor——0n al Daily Freight Service bet ween Victoria and Sidney AKE PREPARKD TO ALL CLASSKS OF AND PARCKLS fi 0 WE HANDLE PREIGHT WAREHOUSE AT VICTORIA: i 7. —S0Hn60————o0 .
