eS A SPLENDID TOKEN oy .. The Editorials... RAWAL HE gitt ‘of. a scholarship for North Saanich students by on, Fred: Wright last week, as a token of his appreciation to the district at large, could not have taken a happier form. : It exemplifies the type of clear and forward thinking os 2 this businessman has evidently devoted to his business. It is-a simple “thank you” in the best of good taste. -~ We join that large company of district residents in thanking Mr. Wright for his generous and thoughtful gift. ’-It-has long been a source of annoyance that this young Province, so overburdened with natural resources, should lose its. youth to the more developed land to the south of us. “For years our boys and girls have left their native land to seek a living in the United States of America. With such gifts as that of Mr. Wright our youth may continue with their specialized studies and develop the vast resources of British Columbia. and Canada, to the end that jobs and work will be available here., The B.C. Products Bureau has a campaign to provide ‘bursaries for jub studies. In 1946 there have been three --awards amounting to'$150 in each of the 19 districts. --:. With such donations to local schools, with emphasis on -- local products, a knowledge of what is made and sold in ee British Columbia will become known to every student. The field for improvement and invention. will enlarge and - ‘increase. It soon will not be necessary for our boys and girls to go-away to make a living. One B:C. product may well ‘help another. -.-. It is for these reasons, and forthe fine spirit in which Be the gift -was.made, that we join in thanking Mr. Wright for his gift. -CO-OPERATIVES SHOULD NOT COMPETE el rresi totems on an Editorial in The Review, the Cana- “ “dian: Co-Operator,. published at Brantford, in the interests of: the: Canadian Co- Oper ative Movement, has the following to say: . The fact is always disturbing to ones wife when the thought is expressed. A coldness appears, a shadow. crosses otherwise composed features. : The reason is obvious. One becomes highly critical in ones own home ... be it ever so humble. Surrounded by the familiar furnish- ings, and books, steeped in the comfort. of the well-known dressing jacket, the favorite chair, ones sensibilities are receptive to any change. The tea is just a trifle too strong, not just the right temperature, bordering on the luke-warm . bah! Such things are noticed immediately. But when one is away, a guest in another house, such finer points are lost. Perhaps the conversation tends to detract from the proper appreciation of the drink. Anyhow, it always seems to be so. For further proof I give you the winetaster of the French vineyards ... does he go trotting all over the country sampling the vintage. No, he sits right in his own gloomy cave and sips... he is in his own surroundings, and he knows his vintages. a * Er * . “Hey ... what’s all this about a tax for the Milk Producers?” It was Jim, and he was upset. “They’ve stripped the cream line on my milk till it just lies under the cap... and now they’v ve plonked a tax on the stuff ... .. who pays for it?” : “The answer will, be obvious,” we replied, sadly. “Well, they’ll have to heave in another bucketful of water,” Jim, brightening, “then I won’t have to touch the stuff at all.” said Tact is ably demonstrated by the following story. An American resident in China remonstrated with her houseboy for taking the linen into her bedroont without knocking. ‘““That’s all right, Missy,’’ said the native. “Everytime come, -lookee through keyhole. Nothing on, no come in.” As an antidote the story told of Bernard Shaw will help. The great Shaw once received an invitation from a woman who was a celebrity hunter for her social functions. The bid read, “Mrs. Smith will be at “home on Thursday between four and six o’clock.” The author sent the card back after Besibbing =* on the bottom: “So will Bernard Shaw.” oo 0 Gem am 11-1 ED OED 0 EDD 2 EME (TED Neer 0 ese bee ea ene ea enema em am OS Provinces,” Premier John.
